Job DescriptionUnder the direction of the Laboratory Manager/Director with a broad latitude for independent judgement and decision-making skills. Supervises trains and assigns duties in the laboratory for technologists, phlebotomists and clerical staff to ensure absolute coverage of the laboratory. Performs moderate and low complexity clinical laboratory tests on specimens for screening and diagnostic purposes. Participates in validation studies for the laboratory. Assist in training the nursing staff on new and ongoing laboratory procedures. Participates in proficiency test for laboratory compliance and readiness. Provide ancillary support to the Respiratory Department, Nursing Facility and Diagnostic Treatment Center for testing and diagnostic procedures for the laboratory. Cleans laboratory equipment and performs clerical duties in support of laboratory/phlebotomy duties.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesAreas of responsibility include but are not limited to Gouverneur laboratory, dispatch, quality control, quality assurance and inventory.1. Directly supervises technologists, phlebotomists, and clerical staff in the performance of their duties routinely throughout the day. Regularly completes performance appraisals on findings and conducts counsel when applicable with the laboratory manager and upon completion of appraisal.2. Schedules staff ensuring fair and equal policies are followed.3. Report and files infectious disease reports sent from Northwell, Bellevue, NYSDOH via telephone, fax, printer, or mail.4. Draws blood for laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in accordance with laboratory/hospital established protocols/procedures.5. Provide instruction to patients to ensure the integrity of specimen and appropriateness of specimens.6. Follows laboratory/hospital policy and procedures for identifying patients and patient specimens.7. Perform in Epic electronic medical record, thorough and adequate chart review before collecting labels for scheduled tests.8. Maintains required laboratory records and logs. 9. Conducts scheduling and registration of laboratory patients. Employs proper verification of medical insurance and identification.10. Responsible for the maintenance of laboratory equipment; Submits tickets: inventory/stock of lab supplies; and check for expired supplies.11. Performs clerical tasks in support of blood drawing activities including accessioning of laboratory specimen via Cerner, laboratory information system.12. Adheres to Infection Control practices including blood/body fluid precautions and isolation techniques.13. Adheres to safety precaution to prevent errors and finger sticks.14. Responsible for reviewing and follow up on POC quality control15. POC validation studies as assigned by the supervisor16. Review and follow up on incomplete work lists17. Documentation and tabulation of Laboratory and POC statistical data18. Performs duties related to departmental needs.
Minimum QualificationsValid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED.One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 571 of the New York State Public Health Law.
Department Preferences- Knowledge of medical laboratory technology, phlebotomy
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 2013 or latest
- Knowledge of laboratory organization via hospital and reference. Knowledge of NYSDOH standards part 1 General Systems Standards and Clinical Laboratory Statute and Regulations Part 58.
- Four years of laboratory experience
