General Summary of Position

The Clinical Nursing Instructor functions within the roles of educator, facilitator, change agent, consultant, researcher and leader. The Clinical Nursing Instructor is responsible for teaching within the accelerated BSN nursing program of designated university affiliation and managing university/community educational affiliations that enhance performance, promote professional development or otherwise supports the mission and vision of the Department of Nursing (DON).

The MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) and GW School of Nursing partner to offer Washington Squared (W2) program, an innovative collaboration that fosters continued advancement in health care. This position will be on site at George Washington School of Nursing 3 days a week in Ashburn, VA and 2 days a week at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the clinical expertise, leadership, management, communication skills and knowledge of education theory and principle necessary to develop academic courses/educational programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes.
  • Identifies, coordinates and plans didactic and clinical education for student nurses as assigned by the university program coordinator and MWHC Program Director. Utilizes teaching techniques that promote critical thinking and evidence-based practice incorporating principles of adult learning theory. Evaluates the effectiveness and learning outcomes of educational activities.
  • Plans and conducts interviews of applicants to university and MWHC tuition support program. Collaborates with MWHC nursing leadership to select applicants well suited for the MWHC work environment.
  • Plans and conducts orientation and on-going meetings with university/community affiliates that facilitates university/community personnel acclimation to the MWHC clinical environment and compliance with hospital policies and procedures in conformance with departmental objectives and accreditation standards.
  • Maintains educational affiliations including affiliation screening, contract negotiations and renewal. Conducts assessment of patient care units' capacity for students and coordinate with nursing leadership about plans for students/student groups assignments. Solicit feedback from nursing leadership/nurses about all student and clinical instructor activities to ensure patient safety and high-quality patient care.
  • Actively engages in university faculty meetings and university committee and/or work groups. Actively mentors and supports colleagues, staff, university personnel and community members. Supports and encourages the professional development of students and nursing staff.Promotes Pathway to Excellence standards through daily practice.
  • Participates as education expert on committees, task forces, focus groups and projects to support Department of Nursing and MWHC initiatives. Collaborates within and across the organization to identify internal and external resources available for staff.
  • Incorporates evidence into all clinical education activities. Active participant in research, evidence-based practice (EBP) and/or performance improvement activities. Activities include, but are not limited to, supporting integration of research into practice, increasing staff knowledge and competence about research and EBP, and/or active collaboration with research studies.
  • Minimum QualificationsEducation

    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
    • Master's degree in Nursing, Health Care or Business Administration required
    • Doctoral degree in Nursing, Education, or Healthcare Administration preferred

    Experience

    • 5-7 years of progressively more responsible job-related experience in nursing required
    • 1-2 years of teaching experience in a BSN program required
    • Experience in a nursing advance practice role (education, clinical or administrative) preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
    • Specialty certification in the specialty area from a nationally recognized nursing organization within 1 Year required
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    • NPD - Nursing Professional Development within 36 months of hire. required

    This position has a hiring range of $87,318 - $157,289
