Clinical Veterinarian Immediately adjacent to the vibrant city of Chicago and housed within a modernized urban AZA accredited zoo with extensive community history, this ~650 animal, ~175 species population has hoofed animals, megavertebrates, marine mammals, carnivores, non-human primates, birds, herptiles, and limited fish and invertebrates. The Clinical Veterinarian is a member of a strong preventive medicine program supervised and managed by the Dr. Lester E. Fisher Director of Veterinary Services who is ACZM and ECZM board certified and Senior Associate Veterinarian who is ACZM board certified; supported by four certified veterinary technicians, a hospital keeper, and a pre-veterinary intern. The zoo hosts an ACZM-compliant and ECZM-approved endowed veterinary residency. Services are augmented by the University of Illinois Zoological Pathology Program which provides ACVP service to zoos and aquariums based in Chicago. On site library and literature management provides access to all ACZM and ECZM required resources. The Clinical Veterinarian is primarily responsible for veterinary procedures and records across this program. Competent autonomy is expected following on-boarding period, including support to shipment and quarantine procedures; controlled drug inventory compliance; and to act in a primary capacity with wildlife triage. Due to the active residency program, this position expects ACZM board certification within three (3) years of hire; therefore, current board eligibility is strongly preferred. Pending pre-hiring discussion and their current status in this goal, support of study blocks to achieve this goal will be offered. License fees required for this position and conference or continuing education attendance to maintain these licenses will be supported as combination of financial support or administrative leave. Conference presentations or posters will be expected when these events are attended. Applicants must hold a DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited program, or have a degree and examination combination that permits licensure in Illinois as required within ninety (90) days of hire. Federal accreditation in Illinois will be obtained once employment commences. Applicants should have minimally completed three (3) years of clinical experience with preference given to zoo, aquarium, wildlife, or zoological companion specialty practices; or approved internship or residency training in these specialties. Screening interviews will be scheduled virtually then on-site interviews completed. Employment commencement date is desired by end of January 2025. It includes paid leave as personal time (32 hours/yr), holiday time (10 days), and accrued vacation time with seniority. Compensation range will be offered commensurate with experience and desired background for the position, starting at $88,000 for candidates that are ACZM board eligible within three (3) years, and starting at $93,000 for ACZM board certified candidates.
