Cockayne Farmstead - Preserve WV AmeriCorps
The historic Cockayne Farmstead is a unique historic site unlike any other in Marshall County, West Virginia. The Farmstead consists of an historic, National Register listed farmhouse built ca. 1850, a prehistoric earthen mound, and a large collection of 19th Century family artifacts and documents spanning the Cockayne family's residence from 1850-2001. The 1850 farmhouse has been described as frozen in time, with the last major renovation occurring around the turn of the 20th century. The exterior house has been restored, but the interior has been preserved in place. Preserve WV AmeriCorps is the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia's statewide national service initiative connecting members with rural grassroots organizations and public agencies charged with preserving West Virginia history. The primary goal of this program is to build efficient, effective, and sustainable organizations working to improve economic, social, and cultural opportunities in West Virginia. Members' service is site-dependent but generally lasts for one year and involves tasks related to historic preservation, museum collections management, communications, educational outreach, and volunteer management. There are also opportunities to sharpen your knowledge of hands-on historic trades and learn a new skill during service with Preserve WV. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.
