About this Opportunity The Code Compliance Officer provides technical direction and guidance of assigned service programs or functions, interpreting applicable regulations, providing recommendations, and implementing solutions to compliance issues. The role works closely with Lead Multi-Trades Inspectors to ensure that all Multi-Trades Inspectors are complying with the State Building Codes and Departmental Policies. This position involves performing skilled inspections on more complex projects, requiring considerable independent judgment to interpret the evolving provisions of building codes and their application to practical construction projects and circumstances. The Code Compliance Officer also serves as a technical resource to other inspectors. Work includes:
  • Managing departmental policies that have been established for stop work orders, investigations, condemned structures, and expired permits
  • Tracking legislative bills in the Senate and House that have a direct effect on the State Building Codes as it relates to the function and operation of the permitting and inspection process for the Code Administration Department.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact with County personnel, home/property owners, contractors, various outside professionals, and the public while enforcing regulations with tact and courtesy, are essential for success in this position. Education and Experience Technical school diploma supplemented by five to seven years of experience in building inspection or construction; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Special RequirementsMust possess Standard or Probationary Level 3 certifications in three trades (trades include: building, electrical, plumbing or mechanical); or two trades with Standard Level 3 certifications and the two other trades with Standard Level 2 certifications. These certifications are issued by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board.To pre-qualify with the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board, please visit: Physical Requirements Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 20 pounds). Tasks may require traversing uneven terrain, entering confined spaces and/or climbing ladders during field inspections.
