Job Description:
HOURLY: $15.30JOB OBJECTIVES: Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled and specialized inspection work in enforcing compliance with City building and related codes and ordinances and assisting in the administration of compliance and inspection programs. The individual also has daily contact with the public, receives and resolves complaints regarding dilapidated structures, junked vehicles, weedy lots, signs and street vendors. Will also investigate complaints of property nuisance as per City codes. Inspects buildings and/or property to ensure compliance with minimum standards. Individual has no supervisory responsibilities. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs inspections of property for alleged code violations.
  • Prepares and maintains correspondence, reports and records regarding property code violations.
  • Coordinates investigations among affected departments.
  • Answers public complaints regarding dilapidated structures, junked vehicles and weedy lots.
  • Check for abandoned vehicles and report to police for proper removal.
  • Maintains daily records of inspections and other related activities.
  • Represents the City's code enforcement effort to the public.
  • Assists and advises the general public in matters related to code violations.
  • Issues citations, notices to correct code violations, and testifies in court regarding violations.
  • Inspects premises for overall cleanliness, adequate disposal of garbage and rubbish.
  • Prepares forms and letters notifying property owners and tenants of possible violations and time allowed for correcting deficiencies.
  • Prepares a monthly report listing all targeted lots, dangerous buildings and all other code violations.
  • Explains requirements of State laws and local ordinance to property owners, and other interested parties.
  • Will perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor and/or department director when needed.
  • EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS: City vehicle, two-way radio, general office equipment, computer, copier, scanner, video recorders, digital camera and hammer and nails.WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Works normal office working hours; 5-day, 40-hour week, with occasional work on weekends and after hours as required. Works indoors in a well-lighted, air-conditioned office and outdoors to conduct inspections to ensure compliance with City Codes. The job has some significant hazards and the physical demands are moderate. Position is exposed to hazards which may result to exposure to soiling of clothing and skinEDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED: Requires a High School Diploma with a minimum of two (2) years experience in code enforcement requirements and procedures. Must be licensed as a Code Enforcement Officer within one (1) year from date of hire. Must have excellent grammar, writing, communication and organizational skills, good filing skills and be able to accurately type a minimum of 30 wpm. Bilingual (English and Spanish) is required. Must be computer literate and proficient in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
