Job Description:

The Collection Development and Analysis Librarian (CDAL) curates the Libraries' collections in alignment with the University's academic, research, and creative needs. With liaison librarians and other collection development librarians, the CDAL explores, evaluates, negotiates, and proposes resources and strategies that support campus goals. This includes collection development activities such as developing and leading initiatives to gather data/feedback from users; staying abreast of new products and publishing developments; negotiating favorable prices/terms; making informed proposals for new resources and collection strategies; and reviewing collections and campus needs to re-direct resources and stay current. By promoting evidence-based selection, the CDAL contributes to a sustainable and efficient collections infrastructure. The CDAL works with the Collections Team within the Department of Research and Scholarship to develop, negotiate for, and promote the University's collections.

Qualifications

* MLS (ALA-accredited) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Two to five years of professional experience as a librarian.

* One year collection development or library acquisition experience working with multiple resource types and licensing models.

Responsibilities

Collection Development:

* Work collaboratively with the Lead Collections Librarian and the Head of Collections and Research Services to successfully develop the collections of Syracuse University Libraries in all content types, formats, disciplines, and publisher funding models.

* Maintain awareness of developments, issues, and practices in scholarly publishing, collection development, research, and scholarly communication and how those intersect with campus needs and initiatives.

* Lead collection development activities and develop collecting strategies for assigned resource type(s), selected from but not limited to monographs, serials, media, or databases.

* Initiate and lead effective vendor relations activities for assigned resource types, such as organizing product information sessions, negotiating prices and licensing terms, hosting campus visits and training sessions, and other activities that further business relationships in accordance with the legal and financial policies of the University.

* Prepare and deliver recommendation proposals for new resources to the Acquisitions and Cataloging Department, in alignment with University and Libraries priorities and policies.

* Monitor collections expenditures and manage budget allocations in alignment with University and Libraries priorities and policies.

* Build relationships and initiate conversations with liaison librarians in the Department of Research and Scholarship that develop an understanding of campus research, teaching, and creative needs; apply that understanding to collections strategies and recommendations; and support liaison librarians in communicating collections decisions to internal and external stakeholders.

* Follow Libraries' established workflows for all aspects of collection development processes, which include responding to collection development communications; collecting and prioritizing resource requests; exploring and selecting new resources; and reviewing, negotiating renewal pricing, or deselecting current resources.

* Collaborate with e-resource management, acquisitions, cataloging, information technology, and other collection development staff to maintain, develop, and responsively adjust collection development workflows, negotiation strategies, and infrastructure as needs and collections change.

Collection Analysis and Assessment:

* Determine appropriate assessment methods for different collection development activities, such as new resource exploration, overlap analysis, gap analysis, or user feedback, and carry out data collection for use in collection decisions, negotiations, and strategies.

* Review and analyze both existing and potential collections using quantitative and qualitative assessment tools to determine their value to the campus community.

* Prepare relevant collection, expenditure, or other library data for use in fund raising, outreach, curriculum accreditation, or other activities.

* Collect and review collections-related user feedback and suggestions.

* Facilitate trials of e-resources and prepare results summary for liaison and collection development librarians.

Collections Team:

* Design and deliver team programming that promotes Libraries collections across all disciplines, including physical or online displays, blog posts, events, or other activities.

* Provide mentorship and share best practices on collection development with other members of the Department of Research and Scholarship and Libraries staff.

* May supervise or share oversight of Collections Team student employee.

* Work collaboratively with and the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications and the other CDAL to develop strategies for promoting library resources, highlighting connections with resources held or published by other Libraries units.

Professional Development and Service:

* Participate in interdisciplinary library teams as assigned and work collaboratively and creatively to implement and enhance programmatic services that benefit the University.

* Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the University, and the library profession.

* Maintain awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that increase one's knowledge and abilities, and that positively impact one's performance and service contributions.
