Position Details Position Information Posting date: 11/19/2024 Closing date: Open Until Filled: Yes Position Number: 1011473 Position Title: Collections Care Coordinator Department this Position Reports to: Library, Preservation Services Hiring Range Minimum: $21.50 Hiring Range Maximum: $24.50 Union Type: DCLWU SEIU Level: Not an SEIU Position FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employment Category: Regular Full Time Scheduled Months per Year: 12 Scheduled Hours per Week: 37.5 Schedule: Location of Position: Hanover, NH 03755 Berry 88 Remote Work Eligibility?: Onsite only Is this a term position?: No If yes, length of term in months.: Is this a grant funded position?: No Position Purpose: Under the supervision of the Collections Conservator, the Collections Care Coordinator carries out essential preservation and conservation functions for the Collection Management & Preservation Department at Dartmouth Libraries. As a person with knowledge of preservation best practice and conservation workflows for bound materials, the Collections Care Coordinator makes informed assessments on how best to care for Dartmouth Libraries collections. This includes identifying general collection materials in need of conservation treatment, coordinating Dartmouth Libraries' environmental monitoring program, training and supervising student workers, and processing newly purchased materials. The Collections Care Coordinator also works to create and foster a supportive learning culture, and to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices into work whenever applicable. The position is onsite at Baker-Berry Library. It may involve exposure to dust and mold or the use of organic solvents. Description: Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp: Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: • Minimum of two years of training or experience in conservation, bookbinding, or related field (e.g. museum studies, archival practice, preventative conservation, exhibition preparation). • Experience conducting treatment assessments and performing detail-oriented work on paper-based materials; strong hand skills required (applicants invited to interview may be asked to bring relevant examples of handwork). • Ability to operate specialized equipment, such as shears, book presses, and fume hoods. • Knowledge of preservation standards for library materials (environment, housing, care and handling, etc.) • Experience training and supervising students in basic book repair, or other tasks. • Able to follow directions, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, identify challenges, and ask for help when needed. • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, and positive interpersonal skills. • Able to work standing up, climb step stools, and lift 50 lbs. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suites. Preferred Qualifications: • Familiarity with commercial binding workflows and vendors. • Digital photography skills, as well as working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud programs. • Working knowledge of Airtable. • Superior and demonstrated manual dexterity. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on complex tasks. • Interest in and basic knowledge of digital preservation principles. Additional Instructions: Quick Link: Key Accountabilities Description: At the direction of the Collections Conservator, processes, coordinates, and performs a variety of basic conservation treatments-based on established protocols and professional best practices-on materials contained in Dartmouth Libraries paper-based collections. Percentage Of Time: 25% Description: Works to mitigate environmental threats to library collections by coordinating the Libraries' preventative care efforts, which includes the environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, and disaster preparedness. Is an active member of the Libraries' disaster recovery team. Percentage Of Time: 20% Description: Provides preservation unit support by processing newly cataloged materials, preparing commercial binding lots, and ordering and maintaining necessary supplies for the conservation lab. Percentage Of Time: 20% Description: Oversees the hiring and training of student workers who assist with basic book repair backlog. Percentage Of Time: 15% Description: Supports Collections Conservator and Assistant Conservator with interdepartmental workflows for digitization, exhibition, and rare book conservation. Percentage Of Time: 10% Description: Participates in public outreach through social media postings and plays an active role in Collection Management & Preservation and Libraries'-wide staff meetings. Percentage Of Time: 5% Description: Keeps up to date and maintains awareness of evolving collection care techniques through professional development opportunities.
