Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in Virginia. DHR is a state agency in the Natural and Historic Resources Secretariat. DHR fosters, encourages, and supports the stewardship and use of Virginia's significant architectural, archaeological, and historic resources as valuable assets for the economic, educational, social, and cultural benefit of citizens and communities. The Department of Historic Resources is seeking a full-time Collections Manager (CM) within the Division of State Archaeology. The position requires a detailed individual to practice good stewardship and effective use of artifacts and information records that the division holds. The CM will oversee the maintenance, organization and development of the collections area by providing assistance to the public and scholars for research, exhibition, interpretation, and education; responding to inquiries for researchers and the general public; coordinating incoming and outgoing transactions, contracts, and museum services; working in collaboration with the curatorial, conservation, and archives staff; exploring opportunities for use of underutilized collections in graduate student and professional research; overseeing interns and volunteers to complete strategic collections priorities; managing archaeological collections databases and digital assets; overseeing acquisitions of new archaeological collections; assisting with NAGPRA compliance and review of archaeological collections at DHR, and more.
Minimum Qualifications
Successful applicants will have experience demonstrating strong knowledge of or experience in archaeological research, excavation, laboratory analysis, conservation, museum procedures, and information management systems; federal and state standards and other professional best practices pertaining to general collections care and management and conserva-tion; NAGPRA compliance requirements and implementation; and Virginia and regional pre-contact and historic archae-ology. Applicants will have experience demonstrating proficiency in collections management databases and other soft-ware, including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Access. Successful applicants will have considerable experience demon-strating familiarity with material culture of the Middle Atlantic, including American Indian and Historical eras; collections environmental monitoring, including temperature and pest management; and understanding of basic conservation needs. Applicants should have experience demonstrating strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to organ-ize and manage projects. Considerable experience demonstrating the ability to research and evaluate data in physical and digital records with varying quality of information to provide accurate results for interpretation and reporting. Successful applicants will have considerable experience demonstrating the ability to work with a diverse audience. Experience demonstrating the ability to handle medium physical work - exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Knowledge of and experience with best practices in archaeological collections management and research is strongly pre-ferred. A Bachelor's degree or higher in relevant field such as Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural/Heritage Resource Management, Native American Studies, history or a related field is preferred. Knowledge of Virginia Indigenous archae-ology and Tribal history is preferred.
The selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check as a condition of employment. Tele-working options available at the discretion of the supervisor. A valid driver's license is required.
This position is restricted to 2 years and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding subject to continuation based on approved funding.
