Title: College Faculty: History, open rank positionDepartment/Location: History Department/School of Nations/School of GovernmentOrganizational Relationships: Reports to History Department Chair, Humanities Division Head, Dean of AcademicsSummary: The History Department seeks a new faculty member with expertise in European, Latin American, or African history. Typically teaches nine credit hours (normally three courses) per semester and advises History majors. Additional duties include on-going professional development, serving on campus-wide committees, contributing in scholarly ways, assessment of academic programs, supporting Principia activities, and promoting Christian Science-based character education in accord with Principia's mission as outlined in Education at The Principia. The History Department will be part of the newly formed Center for Narrative, Meaning, and Media, which also includes Digital Media & Journalism, Creative Writing, and Religious Studies. You will be a primary contributor to delivering on Principia's academic vision: Principia College's academic unit strives to create a collaborative and inclusive academic community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and sees each other as infinitely capable and divinely whole.   • Teaches 18-21 semester hours per academic year in History
  • Is an active character educator in accordance with Principia's mission
  • Supports metaphysically the mission and goals of the institution and its operations
  • Maintains office hours
  • Meets with students for academic advising, conferences, and academic support
  • Works actively with others in performing the general business and decision making of the department and the Center for Narrative, Meaning, and Media
  • Assists in departmental and Center work, including assessment, program review, and development of curriculum
  • Teaches courses within the context of Principia's philosophy of liberal arts education
Additional Duties:
  • Serves on academic committees
  • Supports general education, Freshman Year Experience, and writing program expectations
  • Works closely with students to develop their thinking, writing, research, and communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Student of Christian Science
  • Supportive of Principia's mission, vision, and values as articulated here
  • Master's Degree in History or related field; PhD preferred
  • Willingness to be an academic generalist who is able to teach multiple areas within the discipline
  • Classroom teaching experience or work with college-aged students preferred
  • Experience with history research methods
  • Expertise in one or more of the aforementioned areas, plus substantial knowledge of history and world affairs generally.
