Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, maintains safety, provides safety and security services, enforces College rules and regulations, and protects life and property within the Flagler College community and at off-campus properties owned/leased in whole or in part by theCollege. Primarily responsible for conducting patrols of the campus on foot, by vehicle or golf cart; responding to general calls for service and preparing reports online of activities. Locks and unlocks buildings based on a pre-determined schedule or when dispatched to do so. Occasionally staffs fixed posts, following established operating procedures to control access to restricted areas on campus. Designated as an Essential Employee, must report to or remain at work during severe weather events or other emergencies, including when a delayed opening or closing of Flagler College has been announced.Responsibilities
  • Primary Responsibilities:
    • Greet students, staff, and visitors in a friendly, professional manner; act as information resource to visitors as well as members of the Flagler community
    • Perform scheduled and unscheduled preventive patrol of plant and grounds on foot, or in a vehicle or golf cart in a timely manner via radio dispatch
    • Respond to routine calls for service and non-routine, priority or serious incidents; take proper action to deal with suspicious activity, trespassers, loiterers and law violators on campus
    • Conduct preliminary investigations of civil, criminal, or unusual incidents and fire alarms; prepare reports online of work performed using department RMS
    • Open or lock campus building doors, gates and parking lots as directed
    • Turn lights on and off as directed
    • Monitor closed-circuit television systems, burglar alarms, fire alarms and sprinkler systems, and two-way radio communication.
    • Assist ResLife and/or the City of St. Augustine Fire Marshal to conduct fire evacuation drills; evacuate buildings or areas during emergency situations
    • Check vehicles parked on campus for valid Flagler College parking permits; notify parking enforcement personnel to issue tickets as needed or directed; attach and/or remove traffic immobilizing boots from vehicles with unpaid parking tickets; alert Shift Supervisor to traffic hazards or violations that could result in a vehicle being towed and/or booted
    • Provide walking and mobile escorts for students, faculty and staff; assist ill, injured or disabled persons as needed
    • Perform special event assignments, including athletic events, homecoming, and commencement; provide traffic and crowd control
    • Conduct crime prevention educational programs in response to safety concerns
    • Routinely interact with Police Officers from the St. Augustine Police Department and Residence Assistants (RA) during normal patrol, sharing crime prevention and valuable safety and security information
    • Report and correct when possible all life-safety and hazardous conditions, especially those that could result in injury or loss due to fires, prowlers, safety hazards or suspicious activity
    • Regularly attend training and departmental meetings; assume an active role in College and departmental quality improvement efforts
    • Maintain a working knowledge of the Flagler College Student Handbook and the Office of Campus Safety & Security SOP Manual
    • Perform additional duties, clerical and administrative functions, and assist with special projects as assigned
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Serve as the College switchboard operator during business hours as a relief to the full-time operator, and during non-business hours, including weekends, holidays and overnight; monitor the National Weather Service website and/or The Weather Channel for reports of approaching storms that could impact College operations and/or the safety of members of the campus community.
    • Issue warnings to the College community using LiveSafe emergency notification system in the event of emergencies and severe weather conditions according to established College protocols
    • Drive College vehicles, including a multi-passenger van
    • Perform such other College-related duties as may be required by the Director of Safety and Security.
    • Applications will be accepted until the position is filled
    • This is a full-time position that will consist of twenty-four pays per year. This means an employee in this position will be scheduled to work five days per week
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or G.E.D
    • Three (3) years post-high school general work experience
    • A valid Florida driver's license
    • Knowledge of Florida law; security and safety practices, and law enforcement principles in a college environment; ability to work therein during stressful situations
    • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and required physical
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
    • Willing to work various shifts and overtime outdoors as well as at indoor venues year-round, and at times when environmental conditions are poor in terms of exposure to weather or extreme heat during normal shifts, as well as during special details and events
    • Ability to exercise good judgment and operate under stressful or emergency conditions
    • Ability to work without close supervision and to make proper independent decisions
    • Ability and willingness to work all shifts, overtime, and on holidays and weekends; be flexible with job duties and available to work extended shifts with little or no prior notice
    • Tact, diplomacy, good decision-making ability, and sound judgment
    • Basic investigative skills and techniques
    • Ability to read and understand written instructions
    • Ability and willingness to operate a golf cart
    • Ability to prioritize and organize work
    • Must be computer literate (MS Word or equivalent, Outlook, email, etc.)
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • One (1) year of security or law enforcement experience. Comparable duties in the U.S. Armed Services accepted
    • A current Florida Security Class D or G License
    • Associates degree or semester credit hour equivalent, or above
    • Basic First Aid, CPR, & AED certifications
    • Training/certification in the principles of the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods of time; conduct foot patrols in buildings and on campus grounds for eight (8) hours or more; run when necessary; bend, squat, kneel, reach; ascend/descend up to five flights of stairs quickly without rest to respond to routine calls and emergencies; grasp, lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs. with no assistance; perform physical and manual tasks in loading and unloading of heavy equipment; and ability to work in adverse weather conditions
    • Must be able to detect, perceive, identify, and recognize the odor of burning materials, noxious chemicals, or other harmful odors/scents
    • Ability to operate personal computer and associated software packages/programs, a cellular phone, portable radio, AED, hand-held ticket machine, multi-passenger van, and golf cart
    • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to communicate clearly and with understanding via landline telephone, cell phone, two-way radio, and in person
    • Ability to effectively communicate in English in both oral and written forms and to interact with members of the College community and visitors, including people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds
    • Must have clear vision in a variety of light settings
    • Must have manual dexterity to check locks, doors, windows, fire alarm pull stations, burglar and trouble alarm system control panels, etc
    • Ability to think clearly and quickly under potentially stressful and dangerous circumstances
    • Ability to maintain composure and function in emergency and/or confrontational situations
