Job Description:

Minimum Salary: $32,649/Days: 173

Primary Purpose:

Coordinate the preparations, exercises, and activities of the school marching band's auxiliary unit, the Color Guard in the fall and the Winter Guard in the spring semester. The specialist assists in the preparation instructor prepares and directs the unit for independent performance and competitions throughout the school year.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of color guard unit (use of flags, props, equipment, dance, etc.)

Knowledge of routine choreography and composition

Knowledge of and background in marching band auxiliary performance

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

One year of experience working with school-aged students, preferably at high school level

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Planning

1. Attend rehearsals, performances, competitions, and other group activities.

2. Participate in new student try-outs.

3. Prepare warm-up routines/practice exercises for the unit.

4. Choreograph, arrange, and implement color guard routine(s), both as an integrated part of the marching band, and as an independent unit.

5. Evaluate members' abilities and design equipment carriage accordingly.

6. Work closely and effectively with the band staff to develop a visual program, including flag, uniform, and prop design.

7. Instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and related techniques.

8. Oversee and coordinate the program's participation in the North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA) circuit.

9. Create and coordinate the color guard rehearsal plans and schedule with the Band Director and full band schedule.

10. Ensure the highest possible level of performance from the color guard members thorough proper warm-up processes, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.

11. Recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.

12. Work/fulfill a flexible, varied schedule which includes regular reporting as well as night and weekend activities at various times of the year.

Budget and Inventory

13. Ensure that the color guard is properly equipped for all activities.

14. Assist in the management of all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances, including maintenance and repair. Participate in spring semester program planning as needed.

15. Assist in the selection and acquisition of new equipment and materials, ensuring that purchases are within budget allocations. Student Growth and Development

16. Be a positive role model for students by modeling behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. Support mission of the school district.

Classroom Management and Organization

17. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

18. Apply, manage, and enforce student discipline and sportsmanship in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook

19. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

20. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the assigned area.

21. Accompany and supervise students and volunteers on out-of-town trips.

22. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Communication

23. Under guidance of the band director, establish communication with parents of color guard students and organize their efforts in support of the unit.

24. Establish and maintain a professional, cooperative relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

25. Maintain confidentiality.

Professional Growth and Development

26. Participate in staff development to improve job-related skills and participate in faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.

27. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

28. Ensure that all volunteers have completed the District's background check and participation processes.

29. Plan and assign work to volunteer(s) and oversee completion.

30. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment;

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
