Salary : $65,670.00 AnnuallyLocation : Hampton, VAJob Type: Full-Time PermanentJob Number: 08415Department: City Sheriff- AdministrationOpening Date: 11/22/2024Function The Commander of Court Services holds the rank of Lieutenant and is responsible for overall management and administration of the court systems and supervises the Sergeants of court services. Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Director of Court Services and is accountable for use of delegated authority.Pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia and Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Hampton Sheriff's Office policy and procedures, the incumbent must qualify to carry and use firearms. Pursuant to §15.2-1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. Examples of Work
  • Demonstrates positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public
  • Confers with the Director of Court Services, administrative staff and other unit directors pertaining to the supervision, care and discipline of all inmates and deputies under their command
  • Provides overall directions, coordination and supervision, to unit directors in the care and discipline of all inmates under their command.
  • Develops and evaluates policies, rules, regulations and procedures
  • Enforces all Hampton Sheriff's Office policies and procedures
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual budget
  • Attends all staff meetings and has decision making authority in all staff functions, policies, rules and regulations which govern the operation of the department
  • Attends all staff meetings and a key contributor to all staff functions.
  • Supervises the day-to-day operation of the Court Services Unit to ensure achievement of goals
  • Assists the Director of Court Services or Chief Deputy with Court Services employee assignments as required
  • Provides required supervision to all employees in the Court Services Division
  • Trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff
  • Reviews progress and directs changes as needed
  • Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments
  • Collaborates and cooperates with all division supervisors and staff personnel for the purpose of organizing, developing and improving working settings to obtain maximum efficiency and morale
  • Participates in the selection and training of assigned personnel
  • Conducts periodic and annual employee performance evaluations an counseling sessions
  • Coordinates facilities activities with other departments and agencies as needed
  • Attends training seminars, workshops, conferences and schools to maintain required certifications
  • Coordinates and administers special projects and, when necessary, assists staff in carrying out tasks by providing guidance.
  • Conducts facilities inspections to ensure compliance with all policies and procedures
  • Recommends/develops policies and procedures, standards and directives
  • Monitors compliance of new and current policies, regulations, laws and procedures as required
  • Responsible for conducting vehicle inspections and reporting deficiencies
  • Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines, standards and directives of the office on an ongoing basis
  • Meets acceptable attendance requirements at all times
  • Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
  • Disseminates information as it is given by the Department's Administration
  • Completes Job Performance Evaluations on all deputies as required by policy
  • Commends and/or follows disciplinary actions for all deputy sheriffs, when applicable
  • Performs any other tasks as required by the Sheriff or Undersheriff.
Qualifications
  • Ability to interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and policies
  • Must possess thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of modern penology and criminology, knowledge of operations of the criminal justice system
  • Knowledge of use of force techniques and ability to use force when applicable
  • Appropriate use of firearms and other facility issued or approved equipment
  • Ability to skillfully and safely use firearms and other facility issued or approved equipment
  • Ability to read and comprehend laws, ordinances and orders
  • Ability to maintain composure under adverse conditions such as public harassment, critical injuries, and death

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Should posses any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with minor course work in a related criminal justice field, social science or administration. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Requires annual physical and physical agility test.
