Job Description:
The Commercial Underwriter (Hybrid) is responsible to evaluate and write commercial risks and determine the acceptability of an application for commercial insurance based on sound underwriting knowledge and company policy and practices. This position will also review applications, endorsements, renewals, cancellations, and claims.Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Determine the acceptability of commercial business based on underwriting and rating guidelines including review of submitted applications, loss runs, lease contracts and other risk characteristics when applicable.
  • Accept, modify, or decline transactions to ensure a profitable book of business.
  • Handle complex, higher hazard accounts, with guidance and direction from the management.
  • Stay within posted underwriting authority, including but not limited to:
  • Account with a building limit less than or equal to $2 million (upstate) and $1 million (downstate).
  • Account with a total Statement of Values (SOV) of less than or equal to $5 million (completion of FAC worksheet for approved schedules greater than $5 million).
  • Application of Individual Risk Premium Modification (IRPM) up to individual authority (and completion of IRPM worksheet).
  • Review claim files to validate rated classes, identify ongoing exposures and determine future desirability of an account.
  • Collaborate with peers to come to consensus on risks not specifically addressed in our underwriting appetite guide.
  • Stay current on assigned work while identifying and prioritizing all open tasks.
  • Maintain acceptable accuracy on scenario-based assessments (average score of a 3 or better).
  • Maintain production levels within 20% of peer group average.
  • Maintain overall quality score within acceptable level (meeting expectations).
  • Process all emails and assigned tasks consistent with peer group.
  • Process referral quote queue to determine acceptability of exposures as presented.
  • Travel to agent offices to promote NYCM Commercial Products (may require working outside of normal business hours).
  • On occasion, travel to risk locations to inspect and evaluate exposures for program acceptability.
  • Effectively communicate ideas, opinions, and underwriting position consistent with our current appetite with our agents, fellow team members and other stakeholders.
  • Present decisions to agents clearly, being flexible within parameters of underwriting criteria
  • Handle all incoming and outgoing calls in a professional manner, staying within acceptable phone audit scoring parameters.
  • Other works as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience commensurate with a bachelor's degree in a business field.
  • 1 year as associate commercial underwriter or commercial underwriter, or 3 years in the insurance industry (either working for an agency or carrier)
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Extensive knowledge of coverage forms (grants and exclusions) and coverage limits.
  • Proficient in underwriting procedures and workflow processes.
  • Thorough understanding of commercial lines underwriting including applications, endorsements, quoting, renewals, cancellations, losses, audits, and all other daily underwriting tasks.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Proficient in written, oral, and listening communication skills.
  • Proficient in problem solving, risk evaluation, and negotiation skills.
  • Professional attitude toward working independently or within a team.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively
