Job Summary:The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is a public health laboratory whose mission is to improve and protect the human condition by providing accurate and precise testing, service, research and education. Within WSLH, the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) performs many core functions of a public health laboratory:

- Partnerships and communicationCDD performs over 275 clinical diagnostic and surveillance tests in support of WDHS, Wisconsin clinical laboratories, other state public health laboratories, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDD is a national or regional reference center for advanced molecular diagnostics as well as a number of pathogens of public health concern, such as influenza, antimicrobial resistant organisms, vaccine-preventable diseases, and gastrointestinal pathogens (bacterial, parasitic and viral). CDD performs a wide breadth of moderate and high complexity testing and analyses in Bacteriology, Virology, Serology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, Bioinformatics and pre-and post-analytic support units (Customer Service, Specimen Receiving, Data/Informatics and Clinical Orders). Other responsibilities include authority for all operational decisions within CDD, overall management of staffing and logistics, development and auditing of administrative operating reports, budgets, policies, and procedures to comply with regulations, institution policies, and business objectives.Responsibilities:Plans and provides direction for the administrative operations of a division or business unit(s) of the institution to advance program goals and objectives.
- 20% Directs, implements, and monitors strategic planning initiatives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources
- 15% Recommends, reviews, and directs personnel resource allocation to ensure appropriate utilization of resources
- 20% Supervises managerial, professional, and support staff of the unit or division and facilitates unit staff developmental opportunities
- 10% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
- 15% Develops and audits administrative operating reports, budgets, policies, and procedures to comply with regulations, institution policies, and business objectives
- 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- 5% Assist with developing proposals and ensuring that deliverables are completed for multiple grants and cooperative agreements which support division operational activitiesEducation:RequiredBachelor's Degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical or biological science.PreferredMaster's Degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical or biological science or businessQualifications:Required Qualifications:Ten years' experience in a high-complexity clinical or public health laboratoryThree years' experience supervising staff in a high-complexity clinical or public health laboratoryMust meet the qualifications as a CLIA Technical Supervisor for high-complexity testing in one or more of the following subspecialties: bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, or virologyPreferred Qualifications:Five years' or more experience supervising staff in a high-complexity clinical or public health laboratoryThree years' experience in a public health laboratoryExperience managing quality assurance activities in a laboratory settingExperience managing laboratory operations and acquiring laboratory resourcesExperience working in a Select Agent biothreat laboratory programExperience maintaining required laboratory accreditation (CAP, CLIA, ISO)Experience managing a laboratory budgetWork Type:Full Time: 100%It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.Work hours: 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through FridayAppointment Type, Duration:Ongoing/RenewableSalary:Minimum $80,000 ANNUAL (12 months)Depending on QualificationsAdditional Information:WSLH does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment for this position.
