The NYC Mayor's Office administers all city services, public property, most public agencies, and enforces all city, state, and federal laws within New York City. The NYC Mayor's Office of Equity and Racial Justice (MOERJ) is the city's centralized equity office that takes an intersectional approach to advancing change across our city.

Minimum Qualifications

The NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice seeks an experienced Director of Strategic Communications & Culture. Reporting to the Chief Content Officer (CCO), this role is a critical member of the Strategic Communications & Culture team, working across marketing, communications, events and programs that reinforce the agency mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Press Relations + Publicity: Develop and maintain up-to-date press lists, generate media interest, write press releases, and media alerts.
  • Project Management: Maintain project pace and trajectories for successful execution of communication initiatives.
  • Content Creation: Craft compelling and strategic editorial and graphical content across various platforms.
  • Social Media Management: Strategize, implement, and oversee social media campaigns across multiple platforms.
  • Event Management: Help plan, execute, and manage successful events that align with MOERJ goals.
  • Internal Communications: Operate and execute employee engagement programs aligned with organizational values and mission.
  • Team Leadership: Support and guide subordinate staff to ensure cohesive and impactful communication initiatives.
  • Partner Relationships: Foster strong relationships with external agencies to achieve collaborative success.
  • Reporting: Produce both quantitative and qualitative reports to measure communication effectiveness.
  • Web Management: Assist with the editorial management of MOERJ's website, ensuring it is user-friendly and aligned with our brand.
  • Consultant Management: Help identify, vet potential consultants, assist in onboarding them to internal systems.
  • Marketing Campaigns: Assist the CCO in the development of integrated campaigns that align with overarching communication goals.
  • About You:

    • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and advocating for diverse communities.
    • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field (Master's preferred).
    • Minimum of 7 years of full-time professional experience, with 4 years in communications, marketing, or related field.
    • Proven track record in overseeing traditional and digital media strategies.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong project management skills.
    • Proficiency in managing and analyzing organic and paid media campaigns.
    • Ability to foster strong relationships with external agencies, vendors, and influencers.
    • Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to maintain high quality in communication outputs.
    • Proactive approach to anticipating communication needs.
    • Exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple priorities.
    • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
    • Proficiency in web management, including website creation and maintenance.
    • Experience in event planning and management.
    • Familiarity with legal aspects related to communications.
    • Professional experience that has transitioned sectors in marketing.
    • Proactive professional with a passion for driving impactful communication initiatives.
