DESCRIPTION
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Communications Director shall oversee, direct and coordinate all official city communications. The Director is to ensure all communications are consistent, timely, and relevant. The Director will be the principal spokesperson for the city in response to media or public inquiries.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: WorksunderthedirectsupervisionoftheCityAdministratorwhoreviewsworkthroughconference and reports.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May exercise working supervision over employees engaged in a variety of tasks pertaining to multimedia communications, media and/or special projects related work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Develops key messaging on behalf of the City of Flint as well as coordinates with nationwide media and public relations efforts.
* Performs work associated with producing press releases, and related public information materials.
* Serves as the representative for the city in situations that require publics peaking.
* Cultivates and maintains relationships with multiple media outlets to enhance the City's image.
* Oversees and manages content on the City's website and social media pages. Addresses public inquiries/complaints quickly and effectively on behalf of the city.
* AssiststheCityAdministratorandotherseniorstaffinformulatingofficialpublic responses.
* AdvisestheCityAdministratorandotherseniorstaffonmattersrelatedtopublic relations and communications issues as needed.
* Coordinates all aspects of City ceremonial events, facility grand openings, and dedications including media coordination and outreach, talking points, event logistics ,etc.
* Plans and produces print, advertising and other needed communication materials needed for the City.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Bachelor's degree from a four (4) year college in Communications, Public Administration, Journalism or Public Relations.
B. Three (3) to five (5) years of progressive, professional experience in public relations, communications, and media relations.
C. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
D. Experience in developing, reviewing, and editing press releases and other forms of official communications.
E, Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials and the general public.
F. Strong management skills including the ability to set clear goals, organize projects, establish and manage budgets, develop work processes and manage others.
G. Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
H. Experience in government and/or non-profit organizations with the knowledge oft he workings of municipal governments.
I. Experienceinusingdigitalmediainterfacesincludingsocialmedia,open-sourceweb content management systems (CMS).
