The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Serves as a lead writer and content creator for the URMC Communications Content Hub, a framework that houses staff responsible for developing and publishing content and communications programs for internal and external audiences aimed at supporting the goals of URMC?s strategic plan. Assists and collaborates to develop and implement integrated communications programs that collectively support the goals of URMC?s strategic plan.

GENERAL PURPOSE:

With minimal direction and considerable latitude for independent judgment, and acting as part of a professional collaborative team, coordinates communications activities, materials development (print, video, etc.), and orchestrates required tasks and activities for a range of projects, programs, and events for the Rochester Prevention Research Center (RPRC): National Center for Deaf Health Research (NCDHR). Active and essential contributor to the planning and implementation of RPRC?s overall communications and outreach plan that reaches diverse stakeholders and target audiences. Produce and manage social media and website content, print materials and research briefs, sign language videos, and other publicity materials for research projects involving deaf people and people with hearing loss, such as health surveys with deaf populations and people with hearing loss; epidemiological and/or intervention studies regarding public health issues such as obesity; and developing HIV/AIDS surveillance, outreach, and intervention strategies for use with deaf communities and people with hearing loss. The mission of the RPRC is to promote health and prevent disease with populations of deaf sign language users and people with hearing loss through community-based participatory research.

Supervision and Direction Received:

The Communications Specialist I is supervised by the RPRC Administrator. The Communications Specialist I is accountable to the RPRC Director for the implementation of the job responsibilities set forth in this job description. Expected to work in a professional and collegial manner with RPRC and University of Rochester faculty, staff, and community members & partners, and independently manage priorities and deadlines. The Communications Specialist I will work with the CTSI Director of Communications and other URMC departments to coordinate and disseminate RPRC/NCDHR communications as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

With general guidance as to priorities, and with considerable latitude for independent judgment, manages the coordination, design/production, and distribution of RPRC communication materials. These materials may include but are not limited to: web-based News Blasts, social media posts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, others), newsletters, health education and informational documents, photographs, research briefs, fact sheets, and videos (such as American Sign Language video- blogs or ?vlogs?). Design and develop original content/articles/posts and work with RPRC staff and community partners to get input on content; target audiences for these materials include Deaf populations, people with hearing loss, research networks, funders, broad public health stakeholders, and the general public. Attends RPRC events and community activities to obtain content, photos, video, etc. for future materials development. Reviews content with RPRC leadership and maintains distribution schedule of these communication materials. Coordinates distribution of communication materials to RPRC listservs, websites, and social media outlets.

Coordinates the production of videos for various RPRC stakeholders, including script-writing, filming, editing, and production of American Sign Language (ASL) videos, in collaboration with RPRC staff and stakeholders. Ensures that these videos are accessible to all RPRC audiences, through translation, captioning, and/or voice-over.

Manages the RPRC website (www.urmc.edu/ncdhr) using University-approved web-design software. Creates original web content and materials (as described above), and updates web content on a frequent basis. Works with RPRC staff and stakeholders and University departments to develop and maintain content and respond to feedback about the RPRC website.

Provides general administrative assistance for RPRC operations, including: management and scheduling of meetings and appointments, preparation of meeting materials, monitoring e-mail (personal email and NCDHR general email address), preparing correspondence, managing office supplies (including inventory), copying, manage/trouble-shoot office machines as needed. Provide administrative support for financial operations as needed, including manage travel arrangements and financial reimbursements for faculty, staff, and visitors, arranging for payment of invoices, tracking and maintaining documentation of certain expenditures. Works with RPRC staff to coordinate and plan special events such as annual meetings of the RPRC External Advisory Committee, open houses, and community events. Manages and organizes shared network storage space for electronic documents. Provides advanced word processing and graphics support for research grant submissions, progress reports, and renewals, including significant compilation of materials, proofing and editing; requires gathering and applying knowledge of specific application and submission guidelines used by State, Federal, private and other sponsors. With respect to these activities, works in coordination with departmental grant administrators. Participates in training opportunities relevant to the position.

Facilitates communication with community members and other stakeholders about RPRC research projects. With general guidance from the research team, assists with research project logistics. These activities may include management of confidential documents (electronic and print), ordering and acquiring research materials, organizing events/outreach activities with community organizations, scheduling research- related appointments with participants, and other related activities.

Coordinate communication access services for all RPRC activities. Manage interpreter services requests (approximately 50 hours requested per month). Manage real-time captioning requests. Communicate with RPRC staff and partners to assess quality of services and communication preferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, or related field that includes some writing experience.

1 year of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Excellent organizational and communication skills

Attention to detail is essential.

Must have the ability to juggle several projects at once.

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)

Preferred:

Experience and familiarity with deaf culture and deaf health

Must be skilled with Microsoft Office software; experience with website design, Adobe Creative Suite or similar design programs, and social media outlets is a plus.

Relevant administrative or communications or graphic design experience

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to interact with public, professional, and community- based (?grassroots?) groups, and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others and to accept responsibility for confidential matters.
