The Communications Specialist assists in the facilitation of timely and accurate media coverage and in supporting the CEO and Board of Directors in communicating with the media, public, and employees. Works collaboratively with colleagues from across the organization to promote the goals, messages, image, and awareness regarding public transportation. Responds to crisis communications, newsworthy events and media inquiries. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties are standard for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.Oversee Media and Public Relations Assists in the creation of effective communications strategies to proactively address and respond to issues related to the media and public interest. Researches and writes news releases, social media posts, talking points, fact sheets, presentations, and other communication materials that inform and engage the public, board, and employees. Proactively develops media pitches that highlight RTA projects, programs, and services; coordinates interviews for executive management and board members; assists in providing key messages, talking points, and media training, as needed. Assists in planning and coordinating logistics for media events, news conferences, and public forums. Monitors, tracks, and reports media coverage of RTA and industry-related news. Prepares responses to reporters' inquiries within deadlines. Assists in planning, implementing, and updating crisis communications efforts. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with local, regional and industry media representatives, as well as community and industry influencers. Oversee Content Creation and Internal CommunicationsDevelops and implements communication strategies that include media outreach, social media content creation, and internal communications. Researches and writes content for a wide-range of communication channels, including Agency newsletters, public relations pieces and video scripts/storyboards. Ensures consistency in the Agency's brand voice across all communication channels. Oversee Government RelationsResearches the impact of pending legislation and informs the Executive Leadership Team of their findings; helps create strategies, tactics and programs to advocate Agency viewpoint; and drafts correspondence addressing legislative and regulatory issues. Writes, develops and implements, with RTA's Board of Directors, a legislative action plan identifying key objectives for government relations and activities. Coordinates with RTA's Marketing department to develop and implement public information programs related to the legislative program. Develops and gives presentations to community groups. Assists with grant requests including obtaining letters of support and assists with necessary research.
