The approach has the following distinct components: (1) prevention: engaging youth early in long-term mentorship and developmental activities to divert them from involvement with violent peer groups and behaviors; (2) community mobilization: engaging with concerned organizations and neighborhood residents to build community strategies to reduce neighborhood violence. (3) GDLU/Lincoln makes it possible for violence prevention specialists, , Hospital Responders to enter NYC Health Hospital emergency department to engage with patients injured by Gunshot, stabbing, slashing, blunt force trauma, and other violent incidents these specialists aim are to stop retaliation and ongoing violence.GDLU's goal is to promote healthy lifestyles and to reduce violent injuries to young people ages 11-24 so that the youth do not end up as trauma patients in hospital facilities.Duties and Responsibilities of Violence Interrupter:Deploys and assist outreach workers and violence interrupters to mitigate conflict on the street before it turns violent. These interrupters are credible messengers, trusted members of the communities served, who use their street credibility to model and teach community members better ways of communicating with each other and how to resolve conflicts peacefully.1. Identify and diffuse hot spots for shootings and violence, learning about the causes of shootings and severe violence in order to assist in resolving situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups2. Conduct daily (team) community canvassing- walking the service area to establish program presence, understand current and past conflicts, create opportunities for informal contact with those at risk of involvement in shootings and other serious violence, and become familiar with community members. Must meet a minimum of 15 hours per week of team canvassing.3. Participate in organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings take place.4. Coordinates training programs and conducts case conferences and seminars for training purposes.Duties and Responsibilities of Outreach Worker:5. Identify individuals in the service area who are at high risk of involvement in shootings and other serious violence and engage these individuals in mentoring sessions and activities designed to understand and reject the impulse to act violently and to set more positive life goals.6. Establish a caseload of a minimum of 10 program participants (and a maximum of 15) by the worker's fourth month on the job and maintain a minimum of 10 high-risk participants thereafter.7. Engage participants on caseload by assessing their risks and needs, and providing guidance and support to help them reach goals and milestones.8. Conduct daily (team) community canvassing- walking the service area to establish program presence,9. Understand current and past conflicts, create opportunities for informal contact with those at risk of involvement in shootings and other serious violence, and become familiar with community members. Must meet a minimum of 15 hours per week of team canvassing.Minimum Qualifications1. Four years of full-time experience in counseling, community work or community health activities in a government agency or community organization engaged in providing community services to the public, assisting members of the community in obtaining community services or maintaining liaison with schools, community organizations or other government agencies for the purpose of providing assistance and obtaining participation and support for implementation of community or public service programs; or, 2. Education and/or experience equivalent to (1 above). Study at an accredited college in Sociology, Psychology or other behavioral sciences may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience described in (1 above).
