Indiana Conservation Voters

Location: all cities,IN, USA

Date: 2024-12-01T06:20:27Z

Job Description:

Indiana Conservation Fund's Community Organizer (Spanish-speaking) will be responsible for directing voter, climate justice, and clean energy education initiatives in an Indiana community of their choice. Listening to, learning from, and elevating the issues that people care about in Hoosier Hispanic communities will be the primary focus of this position.

The goal of Indiana Conservation Fund and its family of organizations is to ensure that Indiana's elected officials are held accountable to Hoosiers who deserve clean energy, water and air. We envision an Indiana where the voices of voters, impacted communities, and future generations are centered, and where a new movement of engaged Hoosiers demand that their government prioritizes them and the land, air, and water on which they rely.

The Organizer reports to the Community & Government Affairs Manager. This position is a two-year, full-time engagement.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Serve as an ambassador for energy and justice in the community
  • Register 2,000 new voters and add them to the organization's membership base
  • Build an online community of local residents atop social media platforms, such as WhatsApp or Facebook, to connect residents to community & government resources and showcase community successes, predominantly in Spanish
  • Recruit, train, and elect a Spanish-speaking clean energy and environmental justice advocate to a Rural Electric Membership Cooperative board
  • Assist the Executive Director in securing multiple funding sources to support this work, which will diversify risk and ensure the initiative's durability and longevity
  • Work collaboratively with other employees at the organization on overlapping issues, as a contributive thought partner, innovator, and problem solver

Required qualifications:

  • Spanish fluency (speaking, reading, and writing)
  • At least 1 year of experience in environmental work
  • Deep roots and connections to a Hispanic community in Indiana
  • Self-starter who is excited to create and take creative ownership of their own book of work
  • Passion for environmental issues and advocacy for the state of Indiana and all Hoosiers
  • Eager to learn quickly and across a broad range of subjects
  • Preference for balancing multiple initiatives simultaneously as opposed to focusing on solely a single initiative
  • Creative problem solver and experimenter who thrives when given the freedom to test their own assumptions and lead their own decision making
  • Ability to quickly learn new topics and distill complicated concepts into easily understood intermediate steps and manageable action items
  • Ability to report remotely to a supervisor who is based in Indianapolis
  • Adept communicator who is capable of teaching others and projecting authority
  • Strong focus on clear deadlines, deliverables, and measurable goals
  • Deep understanding of and demonstration of cultural competency in Hispanic community issues
  • Willing to travel up to 30% of the time, as needed

Preferred:

  • Existing relationships with staff from environmental NGOs, state and local governments, and activists
  • Knowledge of clean energy policy, REMCs, and environmental justice
  • Experience working on political campaigns
  • Experience adhering to budgets and tracking expenses
  • Extensive background organizing in Hispanic communities, with in-depth experience in Indiana
  • Understanding of the differences between 501c3- and 501c4-appropriate work
