Community Outreach Assistant III (Multiple Positions) Posting Number req19664 Department Environmental Science-Res Department Website Link Location Outside of Tucson Address AZ USA Position Highlights Join the UA Department of Environmental Sciences' Integrated Environmental Science and Health Risk Laboratory and help create and pilot a national model of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education in YOUR community. This program is funded by the National Institute of Health and the science education objectives include understanding: (1) how advisory boards can foster the development of critical thinking and communication skills; (2) how a summer certification program (rooted in environmental science, community science and visual art) can increase science and environmental health literacy (EHL); (3) how an equity-centered community design approach to data sharing strategies can build a participant's EHL; and (4) how to successfully broaden participation in STEAM learning by historically underrepresented individuals.As a Science Education Partnership Community Outreach Assistant, you will be an integral component of the program and engage adults and 8th-12th graders via: (1) program recruitment, (2) informal education, (3) program promotion, and (4) relationship building. Two Community Outreach Assistants are being hired to provide information and referral, education, and support within the partnering communities. We seek motivated individuals who are dedicated to community and capacity building. Highlights of the position include: (a) Establishing trusting relationships with community members and acting as a liaison between community and laboratory, (b) Recruiting educators and youth, (c) Building relationships with local youth organizations, (d) Participating in planning and networking meetings and public events, and (e) Assisting with the facilitation of a community/youth advisory boards. • Recruiting adults and youth for the community and youth advisory boards and environmental science certification programs. Recruitment activities include: (1) presenting to local schools, youth organizations, and government, (2) attending community fairs and other public events to inform the community, and (3) working with local leaders to increase access to information and project promotion. In this capacity, the incumbent will facilitate the participation of local adults and youth in the community and youth advisory boards and environmental science certification programs and provide ongoing follow-up and connections throughout the project with participants.

Informal Education 30%

• Informing and actively participating in the design of environmental science and art summer certification programs. In some cases, the incumbent might help teach an educational module. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with survey administration as well as formative, summative, and program evaluation.

Program Promotion and Relations 20%

• Develop and nurture relationships with local schools, youth organizations, and government. Assist with the facilitation of the youth and community advisory boards. Participate in networking meetings. Reduce stigma and other barriers to science by providing culturally/linguistically competent and reliable information to community members

Administrative 10%

• Attend and participate in project planning meetings. Organization and documentation is key! Keep a log of all activities and properly document observations a provided iPad or laptop using Microsoft office and google services. Develop an ongoing list of partners to engage and ensure the success of the Science Partnership Award.

• Strong communication skills
• Strength in promoting and recruiting people of all ages for the program
• Be a member of the partnering community
• Feel comfortable engaging adults and 12-18 years old in science and art education
• Knowledge and an understanding of the partnering community, e.g., community connectedness, idiosyncrasies
• Be comfortable with engaging local leaders and educators
• Strong public presentation skills

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.
• Public engagement experience.
• Experience with adult and middle school and above education in the partnering community.
• Experience working in a community-based setting.
• Experience with Google and Microsoft Office applications (spreadsheets, Excel, etc.).
• Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
• Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy. The successful candidate must be able to provide their own transportation to various off-site locations.
