DescriptionThis position is responsible for administrative, managerial, and hands-on work in the development, supervision, and evaluation of programs and events relating to community recreation, day camp, adaptive/special needs, and others.Work is performed under the administrative direction ofthe Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation; work is reviewed on the basis of conferences, reviews, and reports on overall program effectiveness.Examples of DutiesActs as a team member with the Recreation Team by embracing and supporting the vision and mission of the Department.Promotes a positive work environment through the supervision and evaluation of staff and volunteers.Conducts surveys of program participants to ensure participant satisfaction.Responsible for all aspects of Department Day Camps including school break and summer camps.Responsible for the development and oversight of adaptive, inclusive, and special needs programming including Special Olympics programs, adaptive recreation and sports programs, and others.Prepares schedules of events and activities, develops and implements policies, program delivery methods and recommends the establishment of necessary fees in relation to programs and activities.Actively searches for new programming, special events and activities to ensure offerings are fresh and up to date.Establishes an annual budget for all related recreational activities.Develops a marketing plan with the Marketing Manager to consistently promote offerings.Prepares, hires and directs seasonal, part time staff and volunteers associated with the position.Serves as a Departmental representative on a number of committees inside and outside of the City such as RI/Milan School District and United Way.Serves as liaison to internal and external partners such as the Library, MLK Center, ARC, YWCA, and others to ensure effective program delivery, develop collaborative programs and events, and evaluate the needs of our community in terms of community recreation, special needs programming, and underserved populations.Actively seeks and identifies grants, sponsorships, and other fundraising efforts to support community recreation programs and events.Maintains records and prepares reports for the Assistant Director, Executive Director and the Park & Recreation Board.Provides excellent internal and external customer service at all times.Typical QualificationsBachelor of Science degree in the field of Recreation and Park Administration, Therapeutic Recreation; or related field and/or equivalent experience in the field of Recreation and Park Administration. CPRP is preferred, but not required.Clear understanding of marketing, budgeting, target promotion, public relations and branding.Clear understanding of computer technology and skills such as it relates to recreation and leisure services, including Microsoft Office and financial software.Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of subordinate staff.Ability to conduct research assignments and to prepare written summaries and recommendations.Ability to work independently with general instructions.Supplemental InformationSelected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois or Iowa and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
