Community Risk Reduction Specialist perform intermediate protective service work in fire and life safety education outreach; fire prevention and investigation; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fire Marshal. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Performs state mandated fire inspections. Presenting and developing fire and life safety education programs; assists with emergency incident scenes investigations; assists with fire prevention and investigation; maintaining fire prevention division paperwork; responding to emergency scenes and providing assistance as requested, and continuing training and instruction.
  • Performs state mandated fire inspections.
  • Manages Life Safety programs such as Child Passenger Safety Seat Program, Smoke Alarm Installation, and requests for public education.
  • Develop, maintain, and present comprehensive community educational programs and curriculum designed to establish and reinforce fire and life safety behaviors and attitudes.
  • Performs necessary paperwork associated with state mandated fire inspection.
  • Performs necessary data entry associated with state mandated fire inspections.
  • Performs visits to locations where complaint investigations have been made.
  • Assists with or completes fire investigations on emergency incidents.
  • Follow ups on noncompliance report letters to ensure repairs have been made.
  • Follows ups on unauthorized burns inside city limits.
  • Reviews fire protection system reports and sends non-compliancy letters to appropriate persons to ensure repairs.
  • Coordinate the department's public, media, marketing and intergovernmental relations.
  • Maintains required physical fitness through exercise, jogging, weightlifting, walking, etc.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Required Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 2 to 5 years' experience in any of the following fields: fire suppression or fire prevention Special Requirements:
  • Class C Drivers License
  • NC Fire Inspector I (ability to obtain within 18 months of appointment)
  • NC Fire and Life Safety Educator 1 (obtain within 18 months of appointment)
  • NC Fire Investigation Technician (or equivalent) (obtain within 18 months of appointment)
  • NC Firefighter (obtain within 24 months of appointment)
  • NC EMT/Boarded in Onslow County (obtain within 24 months of appointment)
*Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements for an Assistant Fire Marshal may be hired with a minimum starting salary of $50,027.34 or within range based on education and experience.Assistant Fire Marshal Eligibility Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Advance knowledge of education and community outreach principles and techniques; Advance knowledge of software applications, social media platforms and office procedures; general knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire prevention, including inspection, hazards and elimination of dangerous conditions; general knowledge of the geography of the City; general knowledge of the laws and ordinances of state and city regarding fire prevention and arson; general knowledge of the principles and practices of building construction and electrical and mechanical systems; ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to develop, prepare, and deliver presentations; ability to prepare clear and concise written reports; ability to document, analyze and present detailed data, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships community leaders, business owners, educators and general public; ability to articulate and present detailed information in a clear and concise manner to groups of all sizes.
