Independently provides a rangeof duties to support The Commuter, LBCC's award-winning student publication, including the monthly print magazine, the LBCommuter website, and The Commuter's social media, advertising, marketing, and publishing operations.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Must maintain enrollment in at least 6 credits at LBCC, maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout each term, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better, and have financial aid in place to be eligible to work in a Work Study student employee capacity at Linn-Benton Community College.

* Depending on the work-study student's area of interest, the expectation is that students are willing to learn the skills that will be necessary to help them succeed in their position, whether that's exercising basic reporting and writing skills, taking and processing photos, creating art for advertising and promotional materials, posting on social media and The Commuter's website, or other duties as assigned.

* As a co-curricular group at LBCC, The Commuter functions as a working news operation that complements what students are learning in the classroom, whether they are taking journalism, marketing, art, photography, graphic design or other courses at the college. Participation in work-study positions at The Commuter is not limited to students in journalism, marketing, graphic design, art or other related fields.

* Work-study students must be able to meet required schedules and timelines, as well as demonstrate good teamwork and communication skills.

* Prior experience working for a newspaper, magazine, advertising and marketing firm, website or social media operation is not required, though any or all of those skills would be beneficial.

* Work-study students must possess basic knowledge of computers, which are relied on for preparation and processing of news and marketing content. Knowledge of software programs such as Google Drive, Google Docs, InDesign, Photoshop, Google Sheets would be beneficial though not required upon beginning work at The Commuter.

Abilities:

* Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision.

* Must be able to operate personal computers and relevant software.

* Must be able to communicate with contacts both inside and outside of the organization in a manner that reflects positively on The Commuter and the college.

* Requires the ability to work closely with other staff to accomplish the overall objectives of The Commuter.

Physical skills and abilities:

* Requires the ability sufficiently to carry on routine conversations.

* Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment.

* The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Working conditions:

* Work is normally performed in an office setting with little or no exposure to health and safety hazards.

* Staffers of The Commuter also work remotely, whether in the field covering community events or working with marketing clients. They are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from events and meetings they may be assigned to report or when meeting with marketing clients.

* With the approval of the editors and department heads, staff also can carry out their duties at home or other settings (e.g. writing news accounts, editing photos, creating art, designing promotional materials).

* Substantial time is spent working at a computer.

Essential Duties:

* Based on their interests, students can work in a variety of roles at The Commuter, including but not limited to: reporting, writing and editing; photography and graphic arts and design; social media and website editing; marketing, advertising and promotions; and circulation and delivery. In these roles, Commuter staffers can work 10-15 hours per week, depending on their work-study funding.

* Work-study students report to the Journalism Faculty Advisor, who handles the administrative functions of the publication (e.g. paperwork, timesheet approval, job performance updates).

* In their day-to-day tasks at The Commuter, work-study students report to The Commuter's editors and other department heads (e.g. editor-in-chief, photo editor, sports editor, marketing director). The editors and other department heads are responsible for working with work-study students and delegating assignments and work duties, which can vary depending on the role at the publication. For example, a reporting or photography student could be assigned to attend a campus event and then produce a written account of the event, along with photos of what happened. Subsequently, editors would work with the reporter/photographer to edit their work, provide feedback, and prepare it for publication on The Commuter's website or in the monthly magazine. Likewise, a student assigned to the marketing director could be tasked with creating promotional materials for a student club on campus or work with an advertising client seeking to buy advertising space in The Commuter. Or students could produce social media posts or be assigned to edit and post content on the website, LBCommuter.com.

* Work-study students work collaboratively with the editors, department heads, and other staff members at The Commuter, and are encouraged to take on and explore tasks that may at first seem out of their primary area of focus (e.g. a reporter also posting on social media, marketing staff writing news reports or taking photos of community events).

* At the direction of the editors and department heads, work-study students would be expected to meet all applicable deadlines for their assigned tasks (e.g. advertising deadlines, news/photo publication deadlines).

* Work-study students are invited to become full participants in the operations of The Commuter, in whatever role they choose, along with contributing to an efficient and collegial work environment.
