Job Description:

The Compensation Coordinator supports the Assistant Director of Human Resources in the management of the University's Compensation plans. The Compensation Coordinator performs staff support activities to develop, implement, and administer compensation policies and programs. Formulates recommendations regarding development and updating of salary structures, FLSA exemptions, job revisions, organizational structures, etc. May conduct desk audits, reclassifications and salary adjustments. Participate in and/or assist in conducting salary surveys and perform market competitive analyses to determine pay trends and practices to support development of the annual salary program and advise on individual employee pay decisions.

* Performs position classification studies, including analysis of written documentation; conducting online and on-site interviews with incumbents, supervisors, and/or managers as needed to clarify and verify data pertaining to classification studies; and reviewing organizational structures to determine appropriate class and salary levels according to USM compensation guidelines and policy;

* Apply job evaluation techniques to determine the appropriate USM job classification and exemption status to human resource associates and/or hiring managers;

* Benchmarks jobs against survey data and other market information to determine competitive compensation ranges for positions as necessary;

* Participate in USM Compensation Committee;

* Provides data and cost analyses for the Labor Relations unit for use in employee negotiations and collective bargaining agreements;

* Train, educate and guide human resource managers and line managers to administer the university's compensation program on a consistent, equitable, and legally compliant basis university-wide, including reviewing exception requests and annual salary plans;

* Manages projects such as survey participation and analysis and compensation integration;

* Reviews and analyzes proposed starting salaries and makes approval recommendations to hiring managers and or HR Staff;

* Assist in the administration of the compensation program which includes:

* Classifying non-exempt and exempt positions for the University

* Conducting salary surveys;

* Overseeing annual merit pay and COLA increases

* Participating in USM System-wide pay plan development and implementation

* Stays abreast of current compensation and best practices in industry and local governments and make recommendations as appropriate;

* Reviews and become well-versed in the Exempt Pay Plan and conduct internal and external studies to keep exempt staff at comparable salaries;

* May be assigned Special Projects:

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field required.

Experience

* Minimum of two (2) years' of progressively responsible and related experience in human resources management with specific expertise in the area of compensation.

* Prior experience in a college/university setting is desirable.

* Experience working within the University System of Maryland and/or for the State of Maryland is highly preferred.

* Experience with PeopleSoft and certification in compensation preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of basic statistical principles and methods; skill in job analysis and job evaluation techniques; problem; performing job classification and evaluation and/or related human resources functions - Interpreting, explaining, and enforcing policies, procedures and laws - Conducting compensation and benefits surveys and analyzing related data - Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing - Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships - Applying mathematical principles in daily work, including leveraging advanced functionality of Microsoft Excel and other applications to do so - - Utilizing a wide range of computer applications to perform assigned duties, including Microsoft office suite and human resources management systems -Solving and analytical skills; ability to use a consultative approach to resolving compensation-related issues; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Ability to work within deadlines with a high attention to detail.
