Job Description:

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)'s Regulation & Certification Department is currently seeking a Compliance Engineer for our Team at the Superior Township facility in Michigan, just east of Ann Arbor. HATCI's Certification & Compliance Team helps support Hyundai and Kia vehicles meeting the challenging environmental, and emissions standards at the federal, state, and local levels, through certification & in-use testing. Compliance Engineers are responsible for analyzing emissions and fuel economy results, reviewing OBD data and other field related items. Engineers may conduct vehicle emission testing as needed.

The Engineer will be responsible for analyzing emission, fuel economy, and field data. Identifying trends for potential issues and notifying responsible stake holders. The engineer may also be required to coordinating testing with the HATCI vehicle emission lab, outside facilities, or dealerships. Testing may include emissions & fuel economy for in-use compliance (IUVP), OBD rate-based monitoring (IUMPR), fleet durability testing and Certification (EDV, FEDV, EVAP, DDV). The candidate should have knowledge of OBD II, emission & fuel economy test procedures or be capable of quickly becoming educated regarding such procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Responsible for collecting, processing and reporting emission, fuel economy, OBD and field trends.
  • Responsible for scheduling emissions & fuel economy testing as required.
  • Help develop and maintain efficient test data analysis and storage. Proactively follow up on all issues related to these topics.
  • The Engineer will review emissions, fuel economy, OBD and field data, perform routine analysis of the data, determine that all test procedural requirements are met by the testing entities regardless of whether they are in-house, or outside contractors.
  • Support Governance tracking of all Compliance reporting (EWIR, FIR, EIR, CALID-CVN, Running Change, Field Fix, VERR)
  • Follow and report on any issues and changes to EPA and CARB in-use and defect reporting matters. Review TSBs and other service communications for emission and evaporative concerns, and report as needed. Issue reports as required, coordinate decisions regarding additional or repeat testing with the appropriate test requestor(s).
  • Conduct root cause analysis of vehicles/tests related to Certification and Compliance. Prepare and submit engineering reports to management and agencies.
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for this position. Conflict resolution between test requestors and test entities would be another critical factor in this role.
  • The candidate will be expected to have strong people skills.
  • Travel up to 15% (domestic and international)

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of certification & compliance processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle emissions & test regulations such as CFR 40 Parts 86, 600, 1066, and the CCR or a clear understanding of capability necessary to review, interpret, and apply such regulations.
  • Automotive manufacturing knowledge beneficial
  • Engine system and engine management operation knowledge beneficial
  • Working knowledge of OBD on-board diagnostic system operation
  • Working knowledge of HEV / PHEV / BEV would be beneficial
  • Working knowledge of ETAS (INCA), CAN DB tools or manufacture scan tools would be beneficial
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, high integrity and ethical behavior

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Testing and/or automotive laboratory experience beneficial
  • OBD drive cycle-based monitor experience beneficial
  • Valid Driver's License and Satisfactory Driving Record
  • Experience working in culturally diverse team environment beneficial
