Job Duties
Norfolk State University's Department of Facilities Management invites applicants for the position of Compliance Safety Officer. The Compliance Safety Officer is responsible for the development, monitoring, and implementation of the University's health and safety policies and program.
Reporting directly to the Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management, incumbent's duties and responsibilities include:
1. Conduct health and safety inspections and routine inspections of facilities and university campus resources.
2. Respond timely, during and after hours, including overnight hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to health and safety conditions or matters requiring immediate attention.
3. Assist in the development and implementation of the University health and safety policies.
4. Develops periodic safety training workshops for faculty, staff, and students.
5. Provides subject-matter-expert guidance to the University community on matters related to chemical procedures and regulations.
6. Performs regular testing of emergency management equipment and systems, including fire extinguishers, fire alarms, and other safety components.
7. Ensures compliance with federal and state statutes and regulations on safety standards.
8. Monitors inventory of hazardous materials and emergency response supplies and equipment.
9. Maintains retrievable records and files, both paper and electronic of inspections and reviews of health and safety areas of responsibility.
10. Coordinates safety evaluation, service, and/or inspection with external agencies.
11. Maintains a proactive approach to campus community workplace and student life safety.
12. This position is part of the 24/7/365 Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Minimum Qualifications
1. Demonstrated experience implementing environmental health and safety regulatory requirements, and identifying areas in need of improvement.
2. Ability to be on call evenings, weekends, nights, holidays, and as needed.
3. Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying state and federal regulations related to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other industry standard regulations.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of safety and health principles, laws, techniques and regulations.
5. Skilled in utilizing Microsoft excel or related spreadsheet software.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
7. Must possess a valid, unexpired/unrestricted driver's license.
8. Skilled in the use and operation of testing equipment, tools and safety personal protective equipment.
9. Demonstrated skill in documenting and recording systems and equipment status, utilizing computer systems and software.
10. High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalency diploma.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Industry standard certification in OSHA and/or other relevant safety programs (CSP, CIH, CSM, CHSI, OHST, CHST).
2. Bachelor's degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, safety, or related discipline.
