Salary: $37,541.92 - $48,100.00 Annually Location : High Point, NC 27260 Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 4887 Department: Public Services Street Maintenance Opening Date: 09/30/2024 Closing Date: Continuous Job Description Performs difficult skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair and modification of sidewalks, curb and guttering, manholes, culverts, catch basins, retaining walls and related structures; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision may.be exercised over helpers. Essential Tasks
  • Builds and repairs culverts, manholes, catch basins, retaining walls and other related construction.
  • Spreads mortar along guidelines and presses brick, stone, block or tile into proper position and checks alignment.
  • Builds forms and pours concrete for sidewalks, curbs and guttering and finishes same.
  • Sets templates and guidelines to secure proper position and contours of construction.
  • Sets forms for grading and performs other concrete finishing operations.
  • Operates a motor truck to salt streets and roads.
  • Supervises and assigns tasks to helpers and trains them in their duties.
  • Drives trucks to transport workers, tools and materials to the job site.
  • May operate light and medium weight construction equipment.
  • Supervises the maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Requisitions materials as required and maintains inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Qualifications
  • Must have valid appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina and ability to obtain a CDL B permit within 6 months of hire date and a CDL B within one year of hire date.
  • Must be 18 years of age. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work overtime. Must be able to deal effectively with the public. Must have general knowledge of traffic rules and regulations governing equipment operation and transportation.
  • Experience: Some experience with motorized equipment is required and some experience as a Mechanic is preferred. On-the-job training approximately 6 months to one (1) year.

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and handle practical situations and requests made by supervisor; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner.   • Read: Ability to read operators' manuals, safety rules and regulations, instructions, directions, street names and signs, city maps, and other documents relating to job.
  • Write: Ability to write instructions and/or directives as received, notes pertaining to the job, completed assignments on a work log and messages.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction to participate in discussions with supervisor, other employees and the general public.
  • Amount of Training, either on-the-job or formal education, usually associated with this occupation in addition to the Reasoning, Math and Language detailed below.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of CDL A license, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date.
  • 3 years of previous concrete related experience.

  • This position is subject to working inside or outdoors.
The Worker is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker will be exposed to rain, sleet, snow, ice, wind and extremely hot or cold weather. Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the worker should be one. who can work outside in all weather conditions for long periods of time. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty and sweaty. Employee will be exposed to rain, sleet, snow, flooding, high winds, cold and hot weather, trash, grass, trees, shrubs, sand, dirt, tar, debris and insects. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
