Program Dates:05/12/2025 - 08/02/2025Location:Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, WashingtonProgram Overview:The SCA Okanogan-Wenatchee NF Invasive & Restoration Crew is part of the Student Conservation Association's national network of environmental conservation programs. As a crew member, you will participate in a hands-on, 12-week program dedicated to invasive species management, restoration work, and native plant conservation. You will help protect the natural beauty and health of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, a diverse landscape of 3.8 million acres along the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range. This program also provides an opportunity to qualify for the AmeriCorps educational award upon completion of the required service hours.Key Responsibilities:
- Invasive Species Control & Restoration:
- Conduct field surveys to identify invasive species.
- Implement invasive plant control techniques (manual and mechanical).
- Engage in native plant restoration and seed collection.
- Field Work:
- Serve 40 hours per week, including four 10-hour workdays with occasional weekend and overnight stays in the field.
- Use field tools (e.g., shovels, Pulaskis) to carry out restoration tasks.
- Work in rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions.
- Teamwork & Leadership:
- Collaborate with other crew members to foster a positive and effective team dynamic.
- Participate in leadership development and teamwork activities.
- Live and work closely with the crew for the duration of the season.
- Travel:
- Travel to project sites throughout the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest as a team.
- A program vehicle will be provided to the crew for transportation.
Qualifications:
- General Requirements:
- Interest in environmental conservation and leadership development.
- Ability to work in challenging field conditions (heat, cold, rugged terrain).
- Willingness to live and serve in a communal, team-focused environment.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to carry up to 50 lbs of materials, including seed bags.
- Ability to hike long distances on difficult terrain.
- Ability to work and perform physically demanding tasks in varying weather conditions.
- AmeriCorps Eligibility:
- Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or national.
- Must be 18 years or older (or 16-30 for Public Land Corps).
- High school diploma or equivalent (or actively working toward it).
- Able to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (including background checks).
- Driver Eligibility (if 21+):
- Must have 3+ years of licensed driving experience.
- Pass Motor Vehicle Record Check.
- Complete SCA's Driver Training and demonstrate ability to operate a 4WD vehicle safely.
Program Benefits:
- Living Allowance: $500 per week (subject to taxes)
- Travel Allowance: $650 (subject to taxes)
- AmeriCorps Education Award: $1,956.35 upon completion of 450 service hours.
