Analyze blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare accurate and timely cost estimates for all assigned project opportunities. This includes the detailed review and understanding of the scope and details of the project. The primary objective is to have professional estimators capable of generating accurate and complete scopes of work and pricing with high quality. Estimating/Pre-construction also serves as a development and training environment for potential advancement into the Project Engineer role which is the first level of entry in Project Management.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide accurate, timely, and complete cost estimates for all construction (conceptual and hard bid opportunities). This involves intense review of the scope of the project to properly assess the opportunity. A major component in any bid opportunity is the estimator's ability to anticipate all aspects of the job.
2. Analyze bids from subcontractors and material suppliers to insure accuracy, completeness, and reliability. Part of this process involves take-offs of the various phases of the opportunity.
3. Review proposal specifications, drawings, attend pre-bid meetings, etc. to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
4. Review and incorporate historical data from purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc. into unit and man-hour figures.
5. Maintain files of working documents as back-up for estimating figures.
6. Assist the assigned Project Manager to develop and manage design schedules to insure that projects are designed within required time limits.
7. Maintain close working relationship with the Project Manager to provide information and understanding of the bid to allow for smooth transition into job start up and buyouts.
8. Provide support of marketing and business procurement efforts through active participation in business procurement teams and in developing project updates and bid package documents.
9. Assist in gathering and researching of company historical data used in the estimating function.
10. Prepare summary reports from pre-existing data as required.
11. Evaluate value engineering alternatives - may review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering, quality, or availability of materials.
12. Assist Sr. Estimator and Chief Estimator in assembling the appropriate subcontractor and material suppliers to carry out the Company strategy. This includes selecting knowledgeable subs and using them as a source of information and knowledge, always striving to maintain and expand the subcontractor and supplier network.
13. Analyze information from bids, jobs in progress, and completed jobs to assess competitiveness and profitability in the marketplace under the direction of the Chief Estimator.
14. Prepare a list of bid clarifications for each project.
