Construction Estimator - Electrical
Are you ready to further your career in the construction industry with Helm? As an Estimator, you'll play a crucial role in procuring new work by preparing and submitting estimates for assigned electrical projects. Types of projects may include commercial buildings, high-rise buildings, hospital and other medical facilities, educational facilities and research labs, solar installations as well as signage and lighting work for heavy highway projects. We are looking for someone who has some experience in estimating but is looking to learn and grow their estimating skills. Applicants with significant estimating experience are also encouraged to apply. This role is located in our Sterling, IL office.
Skills / Responsibilities:
- Responsible for procuring & buying out work.
- Review and gain a thorough understanding of the contract plans & specifications.
- Note important project information during review of contract documents.
- Determine scope of work to self-perform and/or subcontract.
- Determine materials & equipment that will be required to build the project.
- Using the company database, develop a list of material suppliers and subcontractors to send an invitation to bid. Work with the Administrative Assistant who will send out the invitations.
- Utilize estimating computer software and historical data to develop project estimate.
- Calculate a complete takeoff of scope of work verifying if plan quantities are accurate. Coordinate bid delivery.
- Communicate project specifics with material suppliers and subcontractors to ensure all scopes are complete.
- Analyze quote proposals for completeness, accuracy and to determine the low bidder.
- Prepare scope letters with complete list of inclusions and exclusions.
- Review bid proposal requirements with Administrative Assistant to ensure all required information is prepared.
- Submit project information to our bonding company to obtain a Bid Bond.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, bid strategy, and presentation meetings as requested.
- Review all estimates with Lead Estimator and obtain their approval of the final estimate.
- Support other department personnel as required, may include estimates for change orders or value engineering ideas.
- For successful bids, create an agenda and lead Turnover Meeting for project management team.
- For successful bids, write material purchase orders and assist Administrative Assistant with the development of subcontracts.

- A comprehensive knowledge of the methods and materials used in electrical construction.
- A working knowledge of estimating tools and techniques.
- Time management and prioritization skills
- Articulate and effective communication skills both written and verbal.
- An understanding of job cost accounting and tracking procedures
- Proficient with Microsoft software products, chiefly Excel.
- Ability to learn new software applications, specifically estimating software if no prior experience.
- Positive and collaborative attitude
- Drive for successful completion of work.
- Eagerness to continuously learn methods and intricacies of construction projects.
Requirements:
- An accredited Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Construction Management
OR
- Sufficient electrical construction field experience with 3 to 5 years of supervisory responsibilities.
Salary & Benefits
Range: $70,000-$90,000
