These appointments are for two full-time replacement posts; however, we would encourage anyone looking for flexible working or less than full time to apply as this may be accommodated.
The successful candidates will be general paediatricians and will join a team of 12 paediatric consultants at Bedford Hospital. Overall, the team provides 1 in 10 attending, on-call cover to general Paediatrics and a Special Care Neonatal Unit. The post holder will join 11 other consultants in providing cover for paediatrics and the neonatal unit, working as a 1:10 consultant cover (two current consultants do not participate in the on-call rota). Annually, they would do five paediatric and three neonatal consultant weeks. We are looking for a consultant with a special interest that would complement the department. Interest in allergy, respiratory, gastro, or haem oncology would be preferred.
The children's service is based at Riverbank Unit and includes a Children's Assessment Unit, inpatients, Ambulatory Care, a dedicated Children's OPD on site, and Meadowbank Special Care Unit providing level 1 neonatal care. The Children's Emergency Department, as part of the general Emergency Department, has been redeveloped to have a dedicated space with a separate waiting area. The department has close working links with several tertiary centres including Addenbrooke's Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Main duties of the jobThe Direct Clinical Care PAs will consist of attending on the ward, Neonatal Unit, and Children's Assessment Unit along with 1 in 10 night on-call as well as general paediatric clinics. The appointee will be expected to foster a specialty interest to complement the needs of the local childhood population and expand the range of local specialty services. The selected candidate might also cover some attending weeks in Luton (approximately 4 weeks in a year).
The job plan is flexible subject to discussion with the department and candidate's experience. The successful candidate will cover the paediatric ward and NNU as Consultant and will be doing a 1 in 10 on-call rota at par with other Consultant colleagues in the department.
You would be encouraged to take on trainees for educational and clinical supervision. You would also participate in teaching for medical students and deliver regular teaching sessions for junior doctors.
The appointee will be encouraged to take an active role in any relevant committees or sub-committees approved by the Trust and help produce, maintain, and update departmental clinical management guidelines in line with evidence-based best practice.
There would be plenty of opportunities to engage in other leadership and managerial activities on a Trust-wide basis.
