ROLE PURPOSE/ POSITION SUMMARY
The Continuous Improvement (CI) Engineer is responsible for leading continuous improvement initiatives in areas of a production plant, including in areas of Safety, Quality, Operations, and Maintenance.
Key Accountabilities
- Processing and packaging improvement in the areas of reliability, waste, labor.
- Daily management of systems adherence in the plant (5S, abnormality handling, meeting structure, CIL, Centerlines, Problem Solving, etc.).
- Training of plant associates in CI methods.
- Perform ROI analysis on new business opportunities.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Owns commissioning, validation, and start-up of new items.
- Responsible for researching, planning, and executing lean programs.
- Acts as a change agent in the organization by driving change and implementing continuous improvement process.
- Uses Lean Manufacturing tools (Value stream mapping, Kaizen, 5S, Gemba Walks, Root Cause, etc.) to identify and develop solutions that drive operational improvement.
- Provides leadership by mentoring associates in the use of lean tools, ensuring transfer of knowledge and creating a culture of CI.
- Coaches, guides, empowers and mentors plant staff in the use of Lean Manufacturing tools.
- Recommends and implements improvements to production processes, methods, and controls.
- Coordinates the manufacturing launch for new or revised products.
- Plans, designs, implements, and manages integrated production systems that assure performance, reliability, maintainability, schedule adherence, and cost control. These systems will integrate people, information, equipment, processes and energy throughout the life cycle of the product.
- Participates in production and department meetings.
- Implements SPC for variable and attribute data processes.
- Establishes new manufacturing systems and modern manufacturing practices, such as, but not limited to: Kanban inventory, 5S, Centerlines, CIL, Abnormality Handling, Lean, TAKT Time Analysis and Line Pacing, Six Sigma problem solving and resolution techniques, and statistical process control.
- Works on the reduction of labor thru automation and tooling enhancements.
- Establishes methods, equipment, and layout of all direct and indirect jobs utilizing time-study.
- Plans and implements or improves work methods utilizing the optimal systems and controls to achieve the production efficiency goals.
- Completes assigned special projects in ergonomics, cost reduction, statistical process control, automation, facility layout among others.
- Evaluates the tasks being performed and establish the method and equipment needed to achieve the quality and production requirements necessary for the job.
- Utilizes time-study to set production standards.
- Analyzes the production system being used and recommend alternatives in methods, line balancing, wage administration and cost reduction.
- Prepares and maintains detailed layouts of processes and related equipment.
- Coordinates the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members, and evaluating results.
- Confers with management, engineering and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.
- Designs develops and tests and/or sources and cost-justify various tools, machinery and equipment for recommended manufacturing methods.
- Applies statistical methods and perform product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement, and improved efficiency.
- Participates in concurrent engineering design reviews.
- Evaluates and validates internal SOPs, Recipes and Specifications and other documents related to the adequate process functioning.
- Evaluates and solves production problems.
- Trains personnel or conduct training to introduce new processes when needed.
- Communicates information or changes within the organization to employees.
- Issues visual, written, and oral instructions.
- Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS/ CAPABILITY PROFILE
Minimum Education
• Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related field
Minimum Experience
• 3-5 years working experience in a manufacturing facility, or, related industry or practice.
Minimum Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities
- Able to implement SPC for variable and attribute data processes.
- Trained in Lean and Six Sigma disciplines.
- Yellow, Green or Black Belt Certified.
- Effective and engaging interpersonal skills to develop teams and professional relationships, including written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor communications for different levels of the organization.
