The Controller is a key member of the financial leadership team and will be responsible for providing broad oversight of financial accounting and compliance matters to assist the college's leadership in the efficient and effective monitoring, management, and control of the financial resources of the college. The position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the accounting, financial reporting, financial systems, financial aid accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, procurement card, payroll, endowment accounting, and bursar/student business office functions. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for leading the annual college year-end audit, is the staff liaison to the college's finance affairs committees of the board of trustees, and directs initiatives related to the internal audit activities across the college. The Controller is responsible for the oversight and stewardship of the college's resources.

The Controller demonstrates the highest level of integrity, honesty and accuracy in financial reporting and maintains the trust and confidence to provide assurances that policy and procedures are implemented fairly and consistently. Knowledge and appreciation for strong internal controls, engagement of the user community into new policies and procedures, and excellent customer service to students, faculty and staff are essential.

Requirements

Essential Functions:

* Directs all accounting activities by maintaining general ledgers, analyzing computer-generated data, and reviewing all accounting records

* Keeps the CFO and other Cabinet members informed by preparing monthly reports as required by the college, state and federal regulations, profit-loss statements, annual corporate tax returns, and special financial reports, studies, and analyses.

* Provides analytical support for financial decision-making; performs financial analysis. Works with the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis in the development of key institutional reporting.

* Monitors and manages all internal control and regulatory compliance matters for the college to create a sound controls environment based on integrity and accountability.

* Coordinates the preparation of the annual budget by providing data, reports, and other information and by forecasting revenues, expenditures, and year-end balances.

* Directs the annual College financial statement audit and the IRS Form 990 filing by providing data, reports, and other information, and by compiling information and preparing reports for the auditors.

* Maintains and upgrades college accounting systems by planning, designing, implementing, and modifying the data process system; by developing and maintaining the internal audit control system; by developing and administering the cash management program.

* Completes cross-check for timelines and accuracy of bank reconciliations completed by the Accounting Manager and cash forecast entries completed by the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis.

* Supervises Accounting Manager and assists in training support staff; assists in selection and training of Business Office staff. Provides secondary direction to the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, Budget Analyst, and Staff Accountant.

* Reviews budget analytics and reports prepared by the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis. Reviews preparation of operating annual budgets prepared by the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis including the regular monthly monitoring of budget vs. actual results.

* Supervise the preparation of fixed asset records, making recommendations for depreciation schedules, useful life, and inventory of capitalized assets.

* Develops policies and procedures for the Business Office to ensure compliance.

* Approves bank transfers and sends requests to the President and Board authorizing group.

* Leads endowment analytics, reconciliations, report generations and administers draws.

* Provides secondary contract review oversight for the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise the results and daily activities of the Staff Accountant, Accounting Manager, and Administrative Accounting Assistant.

Other Duties:

* Work closely with the CFO to prepare materials and reports for the Financial Affairs, Investment and Institutional Operations Committees as well as the entire Board of Trustees.

* Monitor finances and prepare financial reports on fraternity housing owned by the college.

* Manage deposits, withdrawals, accounting, and financial reports for the college endowment funds.

* Work with the Director of America's National Churchill Museum to prepare a budget and financial reports.

* Supervise payments of all planned gift vehicles (charitable gift annuities, etc.

* Fulfill other duties as assigned by the CFO.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration with an accounting concentration required; a CPA and/or MBA a preferred but not required.

Experience: A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, of which three were in a supervisory capacity. Experience in higher education or non-profit accounting preferred but not required.

Skills: Planning, coordinating, and directing a complex financial operation; developing, revising, and installing accounting systems and procedures; interpreting and applying appropriate laws and regulations; preparing various financial statements, operating budgets, reports, and analyses; communicating clearly and concisely orally and in writing; selecting, supervising, training, and evaluating assigned staff, use of computerized accounting systems. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment. Strong customer service, leadership and teambuilding skills required and ability to communicate effectively with employees and other institutional constituents in addressing policy matters, explaining financial processes, engaging in problem solving daily operational issues that arise at the institution.
