Job Summary: The Controller provides leadership and management oversight for the operations of the Client accounting, payroll, financial reporting and accounts payable. Under the general direction of the VP for Finance and Administration, this position is responsible for the integrity and accuracy of the accounting records; for producing timely financial reports; for recommending, maintaining, and ensuring appropriate fiscal policies and internal controls; and for ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws. The incumbent provides guidance on Client fiscal matters and recommends and implements methods to improve and maximize efficiency and effectiveness in all processes under their purview.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversight of Business Office personnel, including the Budget Analyst, Staff Accountant, Payroll, and Accounts Payable teams.
- This role encompasses responsibility for general accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable, investment accounting, capital financing, cash management, compliance, and grant management.
- Demonstrates strong leadership and management abilities, fostering a collaborative and effective team environment through skillful supervision and team building.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare monthly financial statements and various financial reports in compliance with GAAP for internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead the external audit process, including coordination with the audit firm and preparation of necessary schedules.
- Manage cash position, including reporting, reconciliations, projections, and handling line of credit transactions.
- Oversee accounting, accounts payable, cashiering, mail distribution, and payroll functions.
- Review and improve internal controls.
- Manage acquisition, disposition, and transfer of client property, ensuring accurate depreciation and amortization.
- Supervise and evaluate staff, providing training and development as appropriate.
- Ensure timely reconciliations and reporting for monthly financial statements.
- Oversee quarterly and annual reporting for external entities (e.g., banks, S&P).
- Support the annual budget process.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Possess strong fiscal and accounting knowledge specific to not for profit, and/or higher education
- Must also possess strong knowledge in federal, state and local laws and regulations related to financial reporting.
- Strong understanding of the use and potential of technology in the area of financial management.
- Attentive to detail, with strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Must possess effective leadership, management, and supervisory skills.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, master's and/or CPA preferred
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible financial management and accounting experience, preferably in Non-Profit or Higher Education.
- Knowledge of Business Office operations
