SKF in Sumter, S.C. is a world-class manufacturing site with a new line design and installation of state-of-the-art equipment and handling systems. SKF offers solutions around the rotating shaft, including bearings, seals, lubrication management, condition monitoring and maintenance services.
Position Summary: The Controls Engineer performs engineering work varied in nature and complexity encompassing planning, evaluating, designing, developing, and adapting control systems, machines, and new technologies. Their purpose is directed towards producing new products, increasing productivity on existing products, enhancing quality and reducing manufacturing costs (i.e., the optimum use of workers, machines, materials and facilities). This work will be focused on the controls and automation needed to operate the equipment. The Controls Engineer will be expected to works closely with other engineers, maintenance, logistics, manufacturing, and quality to achieve optimum manufacturing objectives. This position's focus area will be multifunction machining centers for turning, milling, drilling, and grinding.
Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to): - Establish engineering and equipment standards for efficient application of automated and control systems and maintains records and files.
- Design, configuration, programming and testing of the PLC/HMI applications.
- Implement PLC and HMI programming standards across manufacturing equipment.
- Panel set-up and testing (IP addressing, I/O check-out).
- Development of I/O lists, cause & effect diagrams, control system panel designs, network architectures, electrical schematics, mechanical designs, calculations, etc. as required by the project scope.
- Selection and procurement of materials for the control system, including panel components, field instrumentation, and electrical equipment.
- Review Vendor data to ensure specifications and project requirements are met.
- Act as automation subject matter expert on CAPEX projects and provide oversight of contracted Integrators or Suppliers.
- Develop automation Scope of Work documents for new projects in conjunctions with operations teams to improve equipment safety, availability, quality, and cycle time.
- Work closely with purchasing, engineering, and project management teams to ensure automation system assembly is completed in a timely manner.
- Assist and oversee equipment build, debug and FAT in Capital Projects Assembly Area.
- Travel to multiple sites required to gather inputs for design requirements, serve as SME during installation, set-up, and debug of new equipment, and perform SAT.
- Initiate cost reduction proposals and investigates proposals from other sources.
- Compile appropriate information, makes recommendations for action, implements (if appropriate) and checks on results obtained.
- Direct / oversee cost reduction and product / process improvement projects as assigned.
- Render technical service to all other departments as required.
- Lead or participate in development of Corrective Actions to address internal or externally identified problems.
- Manage / performs other duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience: - Preferred; 5+ years relevant experience in an automation role within a manufacturing environment, or similar.
- Preferred; PMI Certified.
- Required, BS in Engineering or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Strong background and functional knowledge of PLC and HMI programming, low voltage controls, three phase power distribution, vision systems, electronic sensors, pneumatics, hydraulics, and servo control.
- Experience programming or interfacing with robotic systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word).
- Working knowledge of relevant manufacturing disciplines, cost control, planning, and industry safety regulations.
- Strong knowledge of process improvement tools/techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify complex problems and develop corrective action plan to implement solutions.
- Results-oriented professional who can work across organizational lines and who can achieve business objectives through personal initiative.
- Ability to work effectively with little to no supervision and seek out the necessary resources to complete tasks.
- Strong oral and written communications skills.
