Salary: $33,385.02 - $42,775.16 Annually Location : High Point, NC 27263 Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 6803 Department: Public Services Landfill Facilities Opening Date: 07/17/2024 Closing Date: Continuous Job Description Performs routine unskilled work at the composting and landfill facilities, does related work as required. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Landfill Supervisor. Essential Tasks
  • Ability to provide positive face to face customer service through effective verbal and physical communication.
  • Cleans convenience center area and directs customers in proper placement of material by guiding them to the proper waste disposal locations.
  • Keep the area surrounding the waste disposal cans swept and clean.
  • Prevents customers from scavenging material from cans and helps educate as to proper rules and regulations for disposal.
  • Assists in janitorial duties as needed and assigned by supervisory staff.
  • Monitors incoming material for permitted waste and redirects unpermitted material to proper disposal facility within the region.
  • Litter collection on or around landfill property.
  • Directs incoming and outgoing traffic with use of signals within the facility for proper flow.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Position may be utilized in other locations and duties as needed.
  • Available to work extra hours as needed for special weather events and emergencies.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver's license

  • Comprehend and always respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner obeying safety regulations. Good judgement is important.
  • Minimum Math ability usually associated with this classification:
Ability to use numbers to complete material logs.
  • Minimum Language ability:
Ability to speak and express ideas clearly with supervisors' coworkers and the public.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Read: Ability to read and follow safety regulations and Personnel Resolution. Ability to read and follow product guidelines.
  • Write: Ability to complete basic reports, such as rejection logs.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversate in voice and direct traffic to areas within the facility and utilize two-way radio with internal staff.
  • Amount of Training, either on the job or formal education, usually associated with this occupation in addition to the Reasoning, Math and Language detailed above: On the job training approximately 2 weeks. Formal education which includes basic reading and math skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Hearing/Speaking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word. Perceive nature of sounds by ear. Necessary to converse with supervisor, employees, and the public in person.
  • Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye is required for this position:
    • Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/20 - R 20/20 - L 20/20 corrected.
    • Acuity, mid-range - clarity of vision at ranges from 20 inches to 20 feet.
    • Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/20 corrected.
    • Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships to see objects where and as they are.
    • Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point.
    • Accommodation - Must be able to adjust the eye lens to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from the eye.
  • Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
    • Medium Work:
      • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements usually require walking, standing, bending, lifting, climbing, reaching, stooping, and stretching. There is significant use of arms, hands, legs, and feet.
      • A negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

    • Must sometimes be forceful in the enforcement of landfill rules and/or policies.
    Environmental Conditions
    • Physical Surroundings: usually associated with this classification:
    • The worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental conditions: Protection from severe weather conditions but not normal conditions and temperature changes. Workers are required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather without much heat in the winter or air conditioning in the summer. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting hot, cold, wet, dirty, or sweaty.
    • Environmental Conditions (Hazards) usually associated with this classification: Employee will be exposed to municipal solid waste as well as various other items as discarded. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
    • Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment (which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work.)
      • Trash bags, leaf blowers, rakes and shovels, lawn mowers, weed eaters, generators, two-way radios, various hand tools, and other work aids common to the job.
    • Special Requirements:
    Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to perform manual labor for long periods of time, at a steady pace and under hot and cold weather conditions. Must be able to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. Must have good hand eye coordination.
