The Importance of Coolant
As the name suggests, the primary role of coolant is to keep the engine cool. As you drive, the engine works hard and generates heat. If you are towing, traveling long distances at highway speeds, or if the outside temperature is particularly high, the engine is more prone to overheating. Without enough coolant or if the coolant is old and clogged with debris, your engine will have a difficult time regulating a healthy temperature. Because engine repairs or replacements are extremely expensive, this service is important and will save you money in the long run.
Service Timeline
There are a few ways to tell if your Jeep Grand Cherokee or Dodge Journey is in need of a coolant system flush. We always start by recommending a quick look at the vehicle's Owner Manual which will have a routine maintenance timeline, generally listing a coolant flush after about 3 years or 30,000 miles. You can also bring your vehicle to our service bay for a quick inspection. Regardless of the age or mileage, keep an eye out for warning signs such as the frequent overheating, smoke coming from the hood, or the check engine light coming on in your dashboard. All of these could signal that the coolant is either too low or not flowing properly to moderate the engine temperature.
Coolant Flush Process
When you bring your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram model to our service bay for a coolant flush, our certified technicians will start by cleaning and inspecting the radiator to make sure there is no dirt or signs of rust. Then, they'll take a look at the hoses to make sure the coolant can flow properly and is not leaking. Once all of that is set, they will drain at least half of the current fluid and add a coolant mixture, which also includes water and detergent. In order to move the fluid mixture through the engine system, your car will be turned on for about 15 minutes. The final steps are draining that mixture and adding fresh coolant so you can commute along the Palisades Parkway and head out to Bloomer Beach with confidence!
