Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a unique research opportunity that blends Clinical Research Coordinator responsibilities with Research Regulatory Responsibilities.

The Clinical Research Specialist will provide overall coordination of the hospitals trauma research efforts in accordance with the research and scholarly activities required by the Virginia Department of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services (VDH) and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS). This would include but is not limited to: Assisting in the development and writing of trauma research protocols, data abstracting and analysis, editing manuscripts, dissemination of scholarly activity, coordination and monitoring of clinical trial compliance. The Clinical Research Specialist serves as an expert and resource to the trauma team, patients, and families in human rights and research regulations.

The Clinical Research Specialist will also work directly with the Director of the Office of Research Oversight for the onboarding of all research activities within the hospital. This includes coordinating with department leaders impacted by the research, assisting with contracting, submitting IRB paperwork, meeting with potential researchers, assisting with IRB functions as needed and when not conflicted.

The position requires an employee with the ability to work autonomously but also with the ability to develop strong working relationships. The position will require an employee with a range of research knowledge and skills and a willingness to learn new skills as the position requires.

SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Trauma Research Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to):

Responsible for ensuring VDH and ACS trauma research and scholarship criteria are met by coordination and implementation of clinical research projects /grants;

Plan for and utilize fiscal resources in a cost effective manner;

Direct and coordinate research activities and operations to meet departmental goals, objectives, and scope of care;

Establish, utilize, and maintain effective communication systems;

Develop and maintain quality initiatives;

Coordinate research studies and monitor for clinical trial compliance;

Extract and prepare data for analysis;

Prepare reports and presentations;

Serve as an expert and resource to the trauma team, patients, and families in human rights and research regulations;

Assist in developing and writing research protocols;

Assist in editing manuscripts;

Oversee all research records for completeness and accuracy;

Note: The position does not require the employee to assess, treat, or care for patients but does require the employee to interact with research subjects to explain studies, obtain Informed Consent, and administer quality of life surveys.

Other Research Oversight Duties:

Assist in the daily operations of the Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Medical Center Institutional Review Board Committee (when not conflicted) to promote compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations, Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and the facilitys Policies and Procedures;

Assist with contracts and billing processes for research studies at Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Medical Center to promote adherence to regulatory and billing requirements and the facilitys Policies and Procedures;

Assist with tracking of research patient activity within the hospital to promote regulatory compliance and patient safety;

Serves as a resource to facility administration, facility departments, the Institutional Review Board, Patient Account Services, research personnel and others regarding regulatory and billing compliance related to clinical research activities at hospital;

Assist with developing and implementing Policies and Procedures related to research and the Institutional Review Board operations;

Other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Experience working in Clinical Research

Preferred: Experience working as a Study Coordinator. Regulatory experience is a bonus.

EDUCATION:

Required: Associates Degree

Preferred: Bachelor Degree

COMPETENCIES:

Knowledge: A body of information needed to perform tasks; May be obtained through education, training or experience

Medical and research terminology

Knowledge of federal regulations, good clinical practices (GCP)

Documentation of Human Research Subjects Protection Training

Skills: The proficiency to perform a certain task

Computer skills including use of clinical trial database, electronic data capture, and MS Word or Excel

Verbal and written communication skills

Detailed-oriented and meticulous

Skill in negotiating with and between individuals and groups of people, including associates, management and physicians.

Skill in developing and implementing long-range plans and programs.

Abilities: An underlying, enduring trait useful for performing duties

Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of associates, management, physicians, outside review agencies, patients and families.

Ability to work without close supervision or professional guidance and to exercise independent judgment.

Ability to plan and schedule task and projects and to maintain control of own and others workflow.

Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as business plans and contracts.

Ability to maintain relationships with individuals and groups of people toward accomplishment of work and organizational goals.
