Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time professional experience working in higher education (student experience may be considered). Experience in Residence Life, Student Engagement & Activities, Multicultural Affairs, Global/International Affairs, or related fields.
Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Social Work, or related field. Experience interacting with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students. Proficiency in a language other than English.
Brief Description of Duties:Reporting to the Assistant Director of Diversity, Intercultural, and Community Engagement serving as a member within the Department of Diversity, Intercultural, and Community Engagement and as a member of the Office of Student Life. The Coordinator's primary focus will be supporting and engaging with underserved and underrepresented students at Stony Brook University. The Coordinator will support the day-to-day operations of the LGBTQ* Center and programs. The Coordinator should be knowledgeable of emerging trends and current events that affect students and impact higher education diversity and inclusion initiatives. The Coordinator works across the campus to implement the strategic and assessment plan to further the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Affairs/Office of Student Life and its departments. The Coordinator will strive to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are well-informed about programs, events, and services that enrich our diverse population student experience. The Coordinator will use various project management platforms to develop and execute effective projects and initiatives. The Coordinator will collaborate with the Department of Student Engagement and Activities and will participate in program advising and event management for culturally based student clubs and organizations. Incumbent must have experience working as a member of a team in a dynamic environment with a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
Student Engagement and Program Advising - Be invigorated by student engagement and bring passion to the work of helping create inclusive communities.
- Be a visible and accessible campus leader whose priorities are: establishing and maintaining relationships with students and student groups that include organizations related to students' cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Support departmental efforts to organize monthly diversity-themed programs and workshops in collaboration with faculty and culturally based organizations.
- In partnership with the Department of Student Engagement and Activities, lead student-focused initiatives, coach, advise, and develop culturally based student clubs and organizations.
- Participate in program advising and event management for culturally based student clubs and organizations.
- Establish and provide opportunities for student leaders to develop multicultural competency, understand their leadership roles within the campus community, and exercise social responsibility within the broader context of our democracy and interdependent world.
Campus Climate and Bias Incident Response - Assist in and coordinate processes and protocols for responding to acts of bias.
- Utilize restorative principles and collaborate with other campus offices to provide direct assistance and support to students and make appropriate referrals to campus and/or community resources. Roles may include notifying key parties, engaging affected communities, etc., in consultation with other relevant partners.
- Partner with leadership and colleagues across the University to address global issues that impact students both in communities where they have permanent residence and near campus related to global issues, emergencies, and incidents that may have an impact on our students beyond the campus.
- Alongside the team, serve as a support person and advocate for historically underserved student populations.
Supervision and Administrative Functions - Directly supervise hourly undergraduate and graduate student employees within the LGBTQ* Center.
- Responsible for supporting each employee in the implementation of the department's operational and administrative functions, meeting divisional priorities, and aligning their work with the Student Life strategic plan.
- Identify and implement departmental assessment initiatives through annual assessment planning, staff evaluations, program reviews, and divisional efforts.
- Support the department's mission, vision, goals, and student learning outcomes directed toward a positive, inclusive campus climate for students.
Campus Partnerships and Student Support and Advocacy - Collaborate with University partners to compile and analyze diversity and inclusion data and make data-informed recommendations supporting student success.
- Build and maintain a strong partnership with the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Intercultural Initiatives (DI3), Alumni Relations, Office of the Ombuds, Office of Equity and Access, and other DEI-focused campus stakeholders.
Professional Development and Committee Involvement - Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
- Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
- Evening and weekend hours may be required at times.
Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
