Job Description:
Wittenberg University is inviting applications for the position of Coordinator of Chemical Laboratories. This position supports the laboratory teaching activities within the department. This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt (salary) position, working approximately 40 hours per week. This individual will report to the Chemistry Department Chair.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
* Supervise 10-15 undergraduate Laboratory Teaching Assistants and Laboratory Preparation Assistants per year.
* Prepare and deploy all supplies, equipment, and chemicals for instructional Chemistry laboratories.
* Facilitate maintenance and repair of chemical instrumentation and associated computing resources.
* Purchase supplies and chemicals for all instructional and research laboratories in the Chemistry department.
* Manage the chemical stockroom inventory.
* Arrange for disposal of all hazardous chemical waste from the Chemistry department in coordination with other programs in accordance with Ohio EPA regulations.
* Serve as the Wittenberg University Chemical Hygiene Officer (approx. 25% of time) in the Biological & Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology departments:
* Evaluate workplace conditions, identify risks and hazards, and develop methods of preventing injury and illness in response to chemical exposure.
* Update and create policies and procedures to maximize workplace safety, and ensure compliance with the OSHA lab standard regarding the use of chemicals.
* Ensure that appropriate Safety Data Sheets are obtained, maintained, and readily accessible to employees for all hazardous chemicals.
* Develop and implement employee training programs and maintain necessary training records in accordance with the OSHA lab standard regarding the use of chemicals.
* Participate in incident and near miss investigations, and consider findings when developing policies, procedures, and employee training programs regarding the use of chemicals.
* Collect and track relevant safety related metrics, maintain records and logs, and prepare safety related reports in compliance with the OSHA lab standard regarding the use of chemicals.
* Coordinate and perform site safety inspections and audits to ensure compliance and drive continuous improvement regarding the use of chemicals.
* Monitor OSHA regulatory requirements regarding the use of chemicals and communicate potential impact to the University and Departments.
* Consult and work with other University departments (e.g. Art, Theatre) and offices as needed regarding chemical safety, specifically relevant Facilities staff during the summer and/or whenever necessary.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc. Department(s) subject to change in order to ensure operational coverage.
Requirements:
Requirements include:
* A bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field is required.
* 1-3 years of relevant experience.
* Working knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint with the ability and desire to learn additional software/database applications as necessary.
* Must have, or be willing to rapidly acquire, national certification as a CHO and be willing to attend other necessary/useful training related to the position.
* Must be able to work (using standard PPE) with common chemicals.
* Must be able to recognize and respond to emergency situations.
* Ability to work collaboratively with directors from other offices, faculty and students as well as independently.

* Ability to remain stationary for more than 50% of work day.
* Ability to transport up to 40 pounds.
