The Agriculture Research Development Program (ARDP) in the John W. Garland College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture (CESTA) at Central State University is seeking a core analytical laboratory manager to assist the ARDP in the use and maintenance of its core lab analytical equipment. The core analytical laboratory manager is expected to design and perform standard operating procedures (SOPs)/techniques for the extraction and analysis of various sample matrices using standard wet chemistry methods and advanced analytical instrumentation in the ARDP core lab. The candidate should have experience with the identification and characterization of known and unknown compounds both qualitatively and quantitatively. The manager is expected to work with faculty involved in land grant research to develop new or revamp existing analytical methods and create SOPs. The core analytical laboratory manager will help mentor student researchers working with Principal Investigators in analytical equipment use and method development and ensure compliance with safety regulations and university policies.
* Maintain functionality of analytical equipment for accurate high-quality data collection
* Complete preventative maintenance on the core lab equipment
* Ensure that the use of equipment by researchers is for appropriately funded projects to meet
* the supplies and maintenance needs and to justify effort allocation on the equipment usage
* Minimize reliance on equipment vendors to fix instruments
* Assist in the development of methods and analysis of samples from diverse matrices, including but not limited to samples from plant tissues, animal tissues, food, smoke, vape, air, water, and soils
* Characterization of known and unknown chemical constituents from diverse types of samples.
* Ensure maintenance of chemical inventory and laboratory equipment
* Direct physical and chemical examination of samples
* Direct preparation of equipment, samples, reagents, media, and solutions for use in the laboratory
* Perform complex laboratory experiments to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations
* Data entry, management, and summarization for reporting
* Prepare reports and submit them to researchers
* Assist researchers with statistically valid data analysis and interpretation to prepare research results for presentations and publications
* Help mentor undergraduate student researchers
* Provide instrument training to students, post-doctoral researchers, research scientists and faculty. Other core lab manager duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor
Minimum Qualifications
* Ph.D. in Chemistry
* 5+ years of post-doctoral or equivalent experience in using analytical instruments.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Knowledgeable of data entry management and presentation skills.
* Must be organized and detail-oriented with the ability to work under limited supervision
* Ability to produce outcomes under strict deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience using HPLC, HPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, HPLC-Orbitrap, and Inductively coupled plasma MS technologies
* Experience with handling plant and animal tissues (e.g., cannabis, bees, grain crops, specialty crops, etc.), soil, water, and air sample matrices.
* Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in natural product, soil, water, and air quality analysis
* Grant writing experience
* Experience and interest in mentoring/teaching students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
