Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a Core Laboratory Manager within the Investigative Medicine Department. The Core Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing daily operations within the research core laboratories.

Responsibilities

* Manages organization, develops standard operating protocols, and manages overall function for select core laboratories.

* Manages and maintains equipment within select core laboratories.

* Provides instruction in core equipment use to new users.

* Maintains select core laboratory inventory and work space

* Manages routine maintenance procedures and emergency repair situations

* Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions

* Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.

* Assist new PIs with lab start-up including arranging moving and shipment of items.

* Develop lab safety standards and safety training, including videos, for WMed investigators

* Develop chemical safety standards and chemical safety training, including videos, for WMed investigators

* Develop lab/chemical safety protocols for departmental labs

* Develop lab safety monitoring/continuous improvement program for departmental labs that includes corrective actions

* Manage negotiations and contracts for use of core facilities by Innovation Center and other outside interests.

* Establishes and ensures efficient arrangement and use of laboratory space on the 5th floor.

* Assist in faculty and staff recruitment.

* Onboard new 5th floor employees.

* Develop external user contacts for the core labs.

* Administer the Smartvue Pro System (cold unit monitoring) for all 5th floor laboratories.

* All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

* Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, or related field required.

* Master's in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, or related field preferred.

* Able to perform duties independently and as a team member

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

* Assists Principal Investigators with grant preparation and reporting of results. In particular, ability to assist in analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data is desired.

* Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.

* Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

* The employee must be able to perform a combination of sitting, standing and walking. Must have the ability to hear within normal range and possess the physical capability and hand dexterity to operate basic office equipment. Occasionally lifts average of 30 pounds.
