Job Overview:

  • Hours: 25 hours per week, Temporary, Part Time
  • Work Schedule: This position requires flexibility to work across multiple shiftsfor the Cornerstone Program during the following hours of operation:
  • School Year: Monday to Friday 6 pm - 10:00 pm, Saturdays 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Summer: Monday to Friday 6 pm - 11:00 pm, Saturday and Sundays 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm
  • Location: Fully onsite in the Lower East Side
  • Pay Type: Hourly; $22
  • Exemption Status: Exempt

Program Overview: Education and Employment Services is an 8.2-million-dollar division serving about 8,000 people each year through a continuum of services from Early Childhood Education through Adult Workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. Education Services include an Early Learn Program, After-School Programs (6 sites), 4 Day Camps, Youth Recreation, High School Initiatives including 2 Community Schools, and our Expanded Horizons College Success Program. Programming takes place within 3 community center sites and multiple school-based programs. Employment Services include walk-in employment services, employment services for a public housing population, ESL job readiness training, and employment services for youth including SYEP and Young Adult Internship and Adult Literacy Programs.Job Summary: The Activity Instructor will report to the Cornerstone Program Coordinator, they will be responsible for developing and facilitating innovative activities. In addition, the Activity Instructor will help recruit participants for the program and ensure they are engaged in the program. The work schedule will include evening and some weekend hours.Qualifications: This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with extensive youth development experience to grow and further develop a community-based program. The successful candidate will lead activities, engage youth, and help develop a sense of community.Specific requirements include:
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for Henry Street Settlement's mission
  • High School Diploma and enrollment in college in a related field (Education/Human Development/Sociology/etc.) required
  • Minimum of Four (4) years' experience working in after-school, evening program or youth development
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate engagement strategies for teens and young adults
  • Interest in developing and leading high-quality activities for participants 11- 20 years of age
  • Extensive knowledge of grade/age-appropriate skill development strategies for participants
  • Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work with students from a variety of academic backgrounds and skill levels
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and follow-through skills.
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Flexible and positive team-oriented attitude
  • Must be able to work evenings, some weekends, and on select school holidays
Responsibilities:
  • Work with other instructors and support staff in delivering high quality activities to participants based on their interest and curiosity
  • Have strong knowledge of planned activities and distribute materials and information relevant to activities
  • Plan and execute age-appropriate events, field trips, and other engaging programs to promote enrollment and retention
  • Provide group and individual instruction to participants from created curriculums or lesson plans
  • Find/create opportunities for students to expand and build upon their interests
  • Maintain records of all participants and activities including attendance sheets and progress within the activities
  • Review and assess individual participants via surveys, observations, conversations, etc.
  • Provide mentorship and support to young adults while always maintaining professionalism
  • Attend mandatory department and funder meetings, professional development workshops, etc.
  • Provide Henry Street Settlement with all the required paperwork, certifications, and support documents in compliance with NYC DOH regulations
Essential Physical Job Functions:
  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, or sit for long periods of time, as needed
