Job Summary

Performs professional law enforcement work to maintain order to protect the public, maintain law and order on the campus, detect and prevent crime, direct and control traffic, and investigate and apprehend suspects involved in criminal activity. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant. In the absence of the Police Sergeant, the Corporal shall assume first-line supervisory responsibility on the assigned shift. Also, assists in the administration of public safety for the university campus in accordance with university policy and all federal, state, and local municipal laws.

Responsibilities

* Executes a wide range of tasks to promote safety, security, and law enforcement on campus. This includes, but is not limited to, patrolling, crime detection, investigation, traffic control, and other duties as assigned.

* Ensures that the shift personnel respond to criminal and non-criminal acts as well as service requests, and that each call is handled properly. This is a working supervisory position and will require the corporal to also answer calls.

* Maintains all building security for the campus which includes building locking and unlocking, emergency and exit lighting, all security lighting (lots, buildings, and on bridges) are in working order.

* The corporal may evaluate shift personnel, investigate complaints and recommend disciplinary action within the range prescribed by departmental policy. Directs staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, and planning, monitoring and appraising job results.

* Assists with the managing and training of other officers and maintains records of all activities. Reviews incident reports generated on shift to ensure quality and completeness.

* Completes log book to ensure standard operating procedures are executed by officers on duty.

* Develop good working relationships with other campus departments, faculty, and students.

* Maintains professional and technical knowledge by studying applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, attending education workshops, reviewing professional publications, and practicing skills.

Required Qualifications

A High School Diploma (or equivalent) is required, with one (1) to two (2) years of previous law enforcement and supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

AA or AS Degree in Criminal Justice from an accredited College/University and four years of law enforcement supervisory experience

* Skilled in defensive tactics.

* Ability to observe and define problems, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions.

* Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of law enforcement.

* Ability to conduct interviews.
