Correctional Diagnostic Services Specialist

Diagnostic Centers

This position will provide support services to assigned diagnostic centers by resolving complex issues, i.e. sentences, and commitments, monitoring their production and their compliance with Department of Adult Correction-Prisons and diagnostic policy and procedure, by reviewing their electronic files and their PSD reports and otherwise acting in an advisory position.

This position will provide consultations with administrative and field staff to assist in the identification and correction of problems related to operational issues; implementing legislative and policy changes and administrative directives; providing daily assistance with problems and situations requiring contacts with other sections or agencies, i.e., commitments, releases, OPUS issues. This position will also do research and reports for administrative staff on a variety of issues or topics on an as-needed basis, often in critical situations, for example, special work release cases, etc., for legislators, judges, or the secretary's office.

Presentence Diagnostic Studies

This position will coordinate and administer the PSD program by chairing committees and writing reports to the court. He or she must also consult with other agencies about the PSD program, set up and schedule PSD appointments, and ensure proper disposition of all documents relating to the case after the study.

Other Duties

The following projects are the responsibility of the Diagnostic Services Branch and are assigned in equal number to each of the Specialists by the Diagnostic Services Branch Manager: Overseeing and ensuring compliance with DNA testing statewide; Providing training, monitoring the screening process and ensuring compliance at the diagnostic centers with the Exceptional Students Program, Non-English Speaking Program and Consulate Notification; Daily monitoring of diagnostic centers production statistics; Revising and updating the Offender Rule Book as necessary; Revising and updating the Audio/Visual Offender Orientation video as necessary; Monitoring inventory of psychological test materials with yearly ordering and distribution; Setting up and participating in training programs for case analysts, admission technicians, and behavior specialists and offering other training as needed in addition to following-up in the field; Preparing the Diagnostic Services Branch monthly statistical report.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC12. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About the NC Dept. of Adult Correction (DAC):

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

* Thorough knowledge of the diagnostic process.

* Working knowledge of the policies and procedures as it relates to the diagnostic process.

* Demonstrated experience to interpret policies, procedures, and laws to diagnostic staff.

* Demonstrated experience to develop and conduct diagnostic training sessions.

Bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience as a Correctional Case Analyst; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
