Job Description:

This position is responsible for supervising the work of sergeants, correctional officers, and inmates.

* Manages the operations and sanitation of the prison and the safety and security of assigned inmates and staff.

* Provides training for all assigned staff and new hires.

* Maintains work schedules for all assigned staff.

* Inspects critical documentation daily; conducts daily inspections of all posts.

* Oversees the communication between staff and medical personnel as it pertains to the health and welfare of inmates.

* Oversees the intake of all inmates who provide labor for Muscogee County.

* Responds to the questions and concerns of civilians and city workers.

* Counsels officers and inmates to ensure the maintenance of a safe environment.

* Communicates with staff, inmates, and civilians in the event of a death or serious illness.

* Responds to any prison escape as directed by the Warden.

* Maintains inmate records, including records of medical appointments, prescriptions, bunk assignments, disciplinary action, clothing, and visitation.

* Ensures that security reports are filled out within the established time frame and in accordance with department policy; reviews all security reports for accuracy and clarity on a daily basis; prepares written summaries of security reports weekly.

* Coordinates prisoner activities and prisoner headcount procedures.

* Ensures that correctional staff perform accurate counts of prisoners; authorizes emergency counts; ensures that the master count sheets, log book, move slips, and sign-in and sign-out sheets are appropriately maintained.

* Maintains the tool and key inventories, including issuing and maintaining logs of keys and tools.

* Oversees the inventory and use of firearms and restraint equipment.

* Ensures that all correctional staff are certified annually for weapons qualifications.

* Oversees searches for contraband and the preparation of security reports concerning confiscated items.

* Orders supplies such as inmate clothing, toiletries, and cleaning supplies.

* Administers and maintains logs of drug and alcohol screen results.

* Performs other related job duties as assigned.

* Knowledge of state Department of Corrections guidelines and federal, state, and local laws related to the incarceration of persons.

* Knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures.

* Knowledge of the criminal justice system.

* Knowledge of state Department of Corrections filing regulations.

* Knowledge of modern office, purchasing, and inventory procedures.

* Skill in the operation of standard office equipment.

* Skill in preparing reports.

* Skill in interpersonal relations.

* Skill in operating firearms.

* Skill in oral and written communication.

Must possess a minimum of 96 quarter hours or 63 semester hours of post-secondary education or an Associate's Degree from an accredited College or University. Must have two years of sworn correctional officer experience and a minimum of one year experience as a Correctional Sergeant at Muscogee County Prison or equivalent external corrections experience, or law enforcement agency experience, or United States military experience. Employee must be P.O.S.T. certified as a correctional officer and in good standing. Must be physically fit to assume duties as described in the job description. Employee must have no disciplinary actions resulting in suspension without pay or forfeiture of vacation time in the prior six months. Personal appearance must be in compliance with Officer Manual standards. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee must occasionally lift light objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

* Balancing - maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.

* Climbing - ascending, descending ladders, stairs, ramps, requires body agility.

* Crawling - moving about on hands, knees, or hands, feet.

* Crouching - bending body forward by bending leg, spine.

* Feeling - perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.

* Grasping - applying pressure to object with fingers, palm.

* Handling - picking, holding, or working with whole hand.

* Hearing 1 - perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.

* Hearing 2 - receive detailed information, make discrimination in sound.

* Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.

* Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.

* Manual Dexterity - picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.

* Mental Acuity - ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.

* Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.

* Pushing - use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.

* Reaching - extending hands or arms in any direction.

* Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.

* Speaking - expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.

* Standing - for sustained periods of time.

* Stooping - bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.

* Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word.

* Talking 2 - shouting to be heard above ambient noise.

* Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.

* Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.

* Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.

* Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.

* Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.

* Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in an office, library, or computer room.
