Works in one of three general post assignments: Booking, Pod, Medical, or Floor. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
- Maintains safety and security in the Jail
- Receives, books, and secures inmates upon arrival
- Oversees and maintains area of assigned responsibility
- Conducts daily physical inspections and searches of the facilities, inmates, and visitors
- Supervises inmates' activities (i.e. recreation, visitation, meals, etc.)
- Posts, maintains, and enforces jail rules as well as state, federal, and departmental policies and procedures
- Observes inmates to detect, deter, and/or prevent self-destructive or criminal behaviors
- Assists with transport of inmates
- Performs special duties as assigned
Medical Assignment (in addition to duties listed above)
- Responds to medical emergencies and/or needs of inmates; arranges or provides treatment as needed
- Implements basic and advanced life support according to standing orders and state guidelines
- Dispenses medications as prescribed by doctor
- Evaluates and examines medical/mental histories of inmates; determines nature and extent of injuries
- Performs medical testing including tuberculosis and blood sugar level
- Stabilizes and monitors inmates before and during transport to hospital
- Maintains medical charts, records, and exam rooms
- Provides health care instruction and counseling to inmates
- Assists physicians, psychiatrist, and dentist and schedules appointments
- Coordinates efforts with public safety personnel

- All: Must be at least 18 years of age per Rule 217.1 of the Texas Administrative Code
- Medical Assignment: Graduate of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSRequired

Required within thirty (30) days of employment
- All: Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) training
- All: Valid Texas driver's license
Required within twelve (12) months of employment
- All: Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Jailer certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- All: One (1) year of experience working in a correctional facility securing, searching, and monitoring inmates
- Medical Assignment: Associates degree in a related field
- Medical Assignment: Prior experience working in a correctional facility involving daily contact with inmates
- Medical Assignment: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Bilingual (Spanish)
