Department: PoliceReports To: Corrections SupervisorFLSA Classification: Non-ExemptEffective Date: 05/26/2023CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATIONGENERAL PURPOSE:Under general direction, performs security work of routine difficulty in the care and welfare ofinmates, the daily operation of the jail, and for the maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by the individual in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties as assigned.
- Perform daily jail operations functions; conducts inmate intake; logs property; searches inmates; books inmate into the computer system; checks for warrants in alert; take fingerprints and photos of inmates; dresses out inmates if they are in custody for more than four hours or cannot bond; issues bedding and hygiene produces and places inmate into vacant cell; controls the movement and activities of inmates; processes inmate release/bond; makes calls and prepares bond paperwork; returns inmate property and release from computer; serves inmates meals and distributes medications if necessary; on a pre-determined schedule, issues new clothing and picks up soiled clothing for laundry; and attends to other inmates needs such as distributing toilet paper, movies, pencils, paper, envelopes and commissary items.
- Review booking paperwork to ensure accuracy and completion; reviews fingerprint cards for accuracy; maintain records and prepare reports; and review bills for accuracy, including reconciling meal tickets to records to ensure proper charges.
- Maintain safety and physical security of the facility; perform building maintenance; cleans windows; sweeps; mops, cleans restrooms; removed trash; restocks paper items; vacuums offices, rugs and court room; and paints when needed.
- Conduct inventories of supplies and commodities and notifies supervisor of items that need to be ordered; inventories items at the commissary; replenishes supplies by shopping locally or submits an order request for supplies.
- Support the relationship between the City of Belton and the constituent population by providing excellent customer service; promotes the City goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records and City information; and performs related duties as required or assigned.
- Ensure that job duties are completed in strict adherence to established safe work practices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Standard housekeeping practices.
- Search, transportation, and restraint procedures.
- Suicide prevention and handling of suicidal inmates.
- Report preparation and record keeping.
- State and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing correctional institutions and federal inmate guidelines.
- Structure, organization and inter-relationships of city departments, agencies, and related governmental agencies and offices.
- Effectively communication principles and practices.
- Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Communicate clearly, concisely, and relaying details accurately.
- Determine priorities.
- Analyze situations, detecting problems and facts.
- Respond to emergencies or stressful situations calmly, quickly and decisively.
- Impartially handle individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Maintain confidentiality and communicating with tact and diplomacy.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED and one year of work experience in a police or correctional adult detention/correctional facility, military, or security guard position; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Possession of valid Missouri State Driver's License, some other licenses and certifications may be required within six months of hire such as Live Scan, Taser, CPR, and ALERT Computer system.
Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed in a standard office/dispatch environment; may occasionally be required to lift or carry items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- May regularly be exposed to potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and infectious disease when dealing with inmates and working in the jail facility.
